While the whole world is waiting for an asteroid to fly by earth, a meteorite has created havoc in Russian Urals and injuring hundreds of people. The huge meteorite fell with loud thuds and fire, creating panic in the whole surrounding area and forcing people to flee their homes and assemble in the open. Many people thought that a huge bomb had blasted somewhere, but later it was found to be the work of a falling meteorite.

In the meantime the whole world is awaiting with bated breath the fly by of the Asteroid 2012 DA14 that will be the first asteroid of this size to come this much close to the earth. Though NASA and scientists in space agencies working with other countries have said that there was no chance of it hitting the earth, there was still a sort of trepidation in the air about the likely consequences of a huge asteroid half the size of a football stadium. Reports have suggested that the asteroid may affect a few satellites in the course of its journey so close to the earth.

The meteorite fell near Chelyabinsk, a large city that is around fifteen hundred kilometre from the Russian capital Moscow. A resident was quoted by Wall Street Journal as saying, “There was panic. People had no idea what was happening. Everyone was going around to people’s houses to check if they were OK…We saw a big burst of light, then went outside to see what it was and we heard a really loud thundering sound”.

Meanwhile New York Times in another report quotes another person as saying, “I was sitting at work and the windows lit up and it was as if the whole city was illuminated, and I looked out and saw a huge streak in the sky and it was like that for two or three minutes and then I heard these noises, like claps…And then all the dogs started barking”. Some people suspected it to be a huge bomb blast and handiwork of some terrorists. Reports from more than hundred mile said that they saw objects falling from sky near the city.
