Race 2 that got wonderful opening opportunity at the time of three day long holidays around Republic Day is moving steadily to join the 100 crore club that is dominated by the likes of Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. The film has a Khan of its own in the form of Saif Ali Khan, but the Nawab of Pataudi as he has been anointed recently is not in the same league as the three other Khans. Nonetheless the graph of his popularity has been on the rise in recent years and his being part of the project seems to have helped the movie attract more moviegoers in metros who flock to multiplexes, instead of single screen huge cinema halls that is the norm in smaller cities and towns.
The film also has several very well known names including John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandez and Ameesha Patel. This very interesting star cast besides a very appealing story and also the fact that there were no other big budget film also helped Race 2 race towards total dominance of the box office across the north India and metros in rest of the country.
The movie collected an astounding sum of Rs 51 crore in the first weekend following the launch and has been doing reasonably well even after that. The second installment of director duo Abbas-Mustan’s 2008 film has raked in Rs 71.10 crore within six days of its release in the country. The movie was simultaneously launched in around 3,200 screens in India, which is the third highest screen count for a movie released till date after “Dabangg 2″ and “Ek Tha Tiger”.
Made at Rs.60 crore, the film collected $1 million in the Gulf market and $1 million in the US and Britain. “Race 2 has seen an incredible response by the audiences across international markets! People have braved the weather conditions in UK and on the East Coast in the US and come to watch the movie in theatres”, said Amrita Pandey, executive director – syndication, international distribution & Disney media distribution, Studios, Disney UTV. The film is expected to reach Rs 100 crore within the next few days especially during the weekend when its collections are going to go up substantially.
