Gandhinagar: Gujarat elections went on dotted lines. Psephologists would be feeling very proud of their reports about a landslide victory in Gujarat and a third term for Narendra Modi of Bhartiya Janata Party. It is a very impressive performance for any political leader and Narendra Modi must be feeling over the seventh heaven following the landslide in which he is expected to win 116 assembly seats. Congress Party that was never expected to do well in the election and was never expected to give a tough fight was on course to win 62 seats, just a few more seats than what it had in the last assembly elections.
Congress was looking poised to increase its tally to around 70 seats when the initial trends started pouring in. but as the day progressed, BJP started widening its lead and now it seems that BJP will touch its last tally now and Congress will more or less remain stuck in somewhere near 62 seats. For a party that is in government at the center the idea of not improving on its tally and pose a serious threat to a chief minister who is around for more than a decade is something very embarrassing.
As they counted the millions of votes cast in the two-phase assembly contest, Election Commission officials said the BJP had forged ahead in at least 116 constituencies — just one short of the 117 it won in 2007. The Congress, which had been desperate to oust Modi who has ruled Gujarat since 2001, appeared to be on the winning track in 62 places. Former BJP chief miniter Keshubhai Patel’s newly set up Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) was in the lead in two places in Saurashtra region. “We are confident of forming the government again,” BJP spokesperson Ravishankar Prasad said in Delhi. His party colleagues in Gujarat echoed the view.
Chief Minister’s long time confidant Amit Shah asserted that the BJP was sure to bag a two-thirds majority in the 182-member Gujarat assembly. No result had been declared yet, the officials said. Modi was set to win in Maninagar, his home constituency. The GPP said Modi could have been ousted if the Congress had joined hands with it. GPP leader Gordhan Zadaphia said a GPP-Congress alliance could have ended the Modi regime. Ahead of the vote count, Modi sounded supremely confident. “No need of looking behind, FORWARD! We want infinite energy, infinite courage, infinite patience…,” he said. Gujarat Congress leader Ameeben Yagnik admitted: “We will have to work harder in Gujarat.” Exit polls had predicted a massive win for the BJP in Gujarat. Political pundits have said that a widely predicted Modi win could have him playing a larger role in national politics
