Samsung Galaxy S3 Vs Nokia Lumia 920: Can Lumia 920 compete with S3

Samsung’s Galaxy S3 continues to rock. It is arguably the best Android phone ever. Nokia’s Lumia 920 is set to be launched in the market in the first week of November. The Windows Phone 8-based Nokia handset may pose serious threat against top end phones in the market. Well, here we compare the devices and check what the impact the Lumia 920 will put on the sales of the S3, which has already received record number of sales.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Vs Nokia Lumia 920
Galaxy S3 is the third upgrade to Samsung’s renowned Android phone series Galaxy S. It has come to the market in May and is now making huge buzz among tech enthusiasts. It is known for its quad core CPU, a large 4.8-inch display and a lightweight body. On the other hand, the 920 is Nokia’s first phone to run on Microsoft’s just-to-be-released Windows Phone 8. It is the premium model of the entire Lumia series. The handset has 4.7-inch display and dual core Snapdragon S4 CPU.

Software: Well, the major area where Galaxy S3 and Lumia 920 differ is in software aspect. The former one has arrived with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. It is reportedly about to get the next major firmware update, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Of course, the S3 is termed as the best Android phone ever. It has become a hit product with amazing specs, gorgeous form factor and many other specials.

The Lumia 920, at the same time, is exclusively designed for Windows Phone 8. Microsoft will soon bring the next major update to its mobile firmware. The WP 8 is slated to premier on HTC’s Windows Phone 8X in a few days. Anyway, Lumia 920 is a good handset with some stunning body color choices and brilliant ClearBlack PureMotion HD+ display. Windows Phone 8 is the new update for the mobile firmware from Microsoft. It follows Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update. The 920 is an upgraded version for the Mango-based Lumia 900.

Hardware: Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with a 4.8-inch display that has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and Super AMOLED technology. Under the hood, the U.S. version of the handset mounts a dual core 1.5GHz Snapdragon CPU and has 2GB RAM. The original version has a quad core Exynos chipset and 1GB RAM. It is available in three memory options; 16GB, 32GB and 64GB; plus, they support 64GB external storage via SD card. You have 8MP rear and 1.9MP front cameras on the phone, which has better battery backup thanks to the 2100mAh battery. Android 4.0 ICS comes out of the box and will soon get the Jelly Bean update.

Meanwhile, Lumia 920 comes with a 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor. The device has a display of 1280 x 768 pixels. 1GB RAM and 32GB internal memory are other notable features. When it comes to camera, the handset has 8.7MP Nokia PureView camera. There a 1.2MP front cam for video calls. A strong 2000mAh battery powers up the Windows Phone 8 handset. It has Wi-Fi, NFC and other advanced options for connectivity.

Is Lumia 920 a Threat for S3?
There is indeed a craze towards Windows Phone 8 devices. But, it was also there when Microsoft launched its former versions like WP 7.0 and 7.5 thanks to the company’s commendable marketing campaigns. Yet, they could not win over customers largely. So it doesn’t mean that WP 8 is not going to have a significant success than its precursors. Maybe, it can do well and change the fate of the Microsoft in mobile market.

Anyway, we are witnessing the best days of Android. Google’s mobile platform is doing amazingly great with quick updates, amazing features and loads of great products. There is less chance that Lumia 920 can cause a permanent dent in the marketing influence of the S3. However, it may steal away a share of customers, who have some special interest towards Windows platform.

The Lumia 920 – beautiful design, great features – that’s my choice!

I think Nokia Lumia 920 is a great looking device and it has a lot of color chices and the display is beautiful. I am not a very big fan of Windows mobile platform but the Nokia Lumia 920 is sure going to be different. So that’s my choice.

The 920 does not stand a chance against the S3 – not even close.
I think that Nokia was shot in the foot by Microsoft, so the only people interested in the latest Windows phone would be those who are completely unaware of all the problems MS pushed out the door with Win7 and Mango. MS and Nokia delivered a phone that can’t run Skype (owned by MS), won’t run applications in the background natively, and that has an Office platform with less functionality than the third-party Office app for the BlackBerry. I own the Lumia 900, and can say that my old BB beats it in so many departments that it’s embarrassing.
If you want Microsofts attempt at making their own iPhone, consider the Lumia. Just lower your expectations first.

PS. Don’t know if I made it clear, but the Lumia 900 won’t run ANY mms programs properly. The software platform closes all applications that are minimized, and closes all apps (except music player) when the screen goes to sleep. Sooo, a “smart” phone that doesn’t work because it’s trying to make it’s battery last longer. And no, you can’t change this setting, because there are precious few settings to choose from in the first place and that was one MS thought people just didn’t need/want.

@jerry, dont try to explain tech details about wp7.5 when you dont know anything about it. wp7.5 an wp8 have a technology thats called thombstoning. if you switch an application the other application is thombstoned, it does not keep on running and draining your battery, thats by design. if you dont have that you will have to “hack” it like the One X does, after a couple of seconds the background application is closed and when you switch to it again then its started again.

Lumia 920 is a great piece of hardware but where it fails is the OS. Windows Phone 8 OS will make it a dumb phone. If it comes with Android, then Nokia will be a huge profits! But, the dirty Microsoft-virus Stephen Elop will never allow Nokia to product Android phones. His only interest is boosting WP marketshare at any cost, even if it calls for using entire Nokia resources.

  • Radhakrishna

Yes, Suman is absolutely right. Stephen Elop has all the way acting as if he is a Microsoft employee and using all Nokia resources just to boot WP marketshare/ecosystem. He is robbing Nokia like anything. Nobody can imagine how much loss Nokia made under his leadership. Unfortunately, Finnish people are not able to understand still. I don’t know the reason.

Even if WP8 becomes successful, how can it gaurantee that Nokia will be in profits? WP8 success is divided into 50% by Microsoft, and remaining 50% by all OEMs ( Nokia / HTC / Samsung , etc ). That means, even if WP8 is a huge success, Nokia will get hardly 20% of that success. Fortunately, WP8 is a junk, wall-tiled OS which nobody cares and wants. So, Nokia is not going to survive long. It has already started selling its assets like vertu, head-office, high layoffs, etc. Die Nokia under Elop, you are worth that only!
