Samsung ATIV S Vs HTC 8X; the great Windows Phone 8 battle

The two will be among the first Windows Phone 8 handsets set to be launched. Samsung ATIV S vs HTC 8X fight will certainly interest people

Samsung and HTC are two mammoth Andorid phone developers. The companies respectively feature the world’s most famous Andorid handsets today, the Galaxy S3 and One X. The firms are now to stretch their battle to another platform, Windows Phone 8. They are to fight each other with two great WP 8 handsets, respectively the ATIV S and Windows Phone 8X. Samsung demoed its WP 8-based handset at IFA 2012. Meanwhile, HTC has just surfaced its rival the Windows Phone 8X with many stunning features. Here we make a comparison between the handsets to let you choose the best one.

Form Factor
There is a big contrast in the display size of the devices. The 8X has a 4.3-inch display, while the ATIV S has a larger 4.8-inch screen. Hence, the change is natural in the dimensions of the handsets. The ATIV S is larger and wider than its HTC rival. When the former features 137.2 x 70.5mm the latter has the dimensions of 132.4 x 66.2mm. The 8X is thicker (10.1mm) than the ATIV S (8.7mm). It is a big shortfall for the HTC handset, which wins in weight with 130 grams over the Samsung’s handset that is 135 grams weightier.

Display Screen: Samsung has just copied the display screen of the S3 for its Windows Phone 8 handset. Thus, it comes out with a large 4.8-inch Super AMOLED screen that packs a nice resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels at 306ppi. The HTC rival is to come with a 4.3-inch S-LCD2 screen with the same 720 x 1280 pixels, but with a rather better 342ppi. Both the phones are protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2 displays.

Processing: Surprisingly, both the handsets sport the same innards for performance. You can find dual core 1.5GHz Krait Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 processors, 1GB of RAM and Adreno 225 GPU inside the handsets. The advanced chipset will ensure great performance for the Windows Phone 8 handsets.

Storage and Operating System: The ATIV S is to come in two memory variants; 16GB and 32GB. Plus, the device offers microSD slot for 32GB of memory expansion. The 8x is farther skimpy in storage as it sports only 16GB of memory and there is no microSD slot for expansion. Needless to mention, both the phones are customized for the latest Windows Phone 8. Samsung and HTC have surely designed their handsets with the special potencies to feature the new Metro-style Live Tiles of the firmware.

Camera and Battery: Both the handsets are to sport 8MP autofocus rear cameras. You can shoot 1080p video at 30fps using the phones. The ATIV S has a 1.9MP front camera in style of Galaxy S3, while the 8x has a 2.1MP front camera that can amazingly shoot video at 1080p. When it comes to battery, the Samsung handset is more powerful with a standard Li-Ion 2300 mAh battery, while HTC phone sports a Li-Ion 1800 mAh battery.

Connectivity: The devices show off all major connectivity options. You can enjoy GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, HSUPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, NFC and microUSB 2.0 ports on both the handsets. Bluetooth is also there, but the devices have different versions; the 8X has Bouettoh 2.1 with A2DP, EDR, while the Samsung handset has more advanced Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP. The handset also offers Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA and Wi-Fi hotspot.

Price and Availability
Samsung announced its much-hyped ATIV S at the IFA 2012 in Germany. The handset is slated to come out sometime in Q4. HTC publicized its WP 8 handset on Thursday, Sep. 20. The Windows Phone 8X is expected for release in November. Both the companies have kept mum regarding the potential prices of the handsets. Hopefully, they may come with almost the same price tags, because there are not many differences in their specs and features.

I am really looking forward to these phones and hope that at least one will be offered by T-Mobile. My current phone, the HD7 seems to me to be the perfect size, but if the Samsung is available, I may try it out.
