The phone market is thriving with a number of top-notch devices. All major vendors feature high-end smartphones today. With iPhone 5 set to start shipping in a few days, the entire market is prepared to meet the new Apple phone. We take three premium products from key vendors HTC, Samsung and Nokia for a comparison here. Sure, the devices are One X, Galaxy S3 and Lumia 920 respectively. All the companies have designed their best products to take on the new iPhone. Here we go with our comparison.
Display Screen: All devices are great in display features. The Galaxy S3 is larger with a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display. Thanks to its bigger display, it is now the world’s largest handset also. The HTC One X also has a big display at 4.7 inches. Nokia’s answer to the S3 and One X is the 4.5-inch Lumia 920. When it comes to pixel-per-inch (PPI) rate, One X (312ppi) slightly outdoes the S3 that has 306ppi. Lumia 920 features Nokia’s PureMotion HD+ for great clarity and the S3 has Super AMOLED HD in reply.
Size and Weight: The Nokia Lumia 920 is the smallest of the devices with the dimensions of 130 x 70.8 x 10.7mm. The Galaxy S3 is the largest as it measures at 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm. Of course, the One X falls in between the Nokia and Samsung phones with the dimensions of 134.4 x 69.9 x 8.9mm. When it comes to weight, the One X wins with 130gms, S3 follows with 133gms and the 920 is the heaviest at 185gms. In thickness, the S3 is the winner with a slender 8.6mm body, One X follows with 8.9mm and the 920 is the thickest at 10.7mm.
Processor: The Galaxy S3 and One X originally highlight quad core chips. The former has Samsung’s own Exynos 4412 Quad chip in its 1.4GHz CPU. The latter touts a 1.5GHz processor with the Nvidia’s famous Tegra 3 quad core chip. The U.S. versions of the both the devices feature Snapdragon S4 chips, however. The Nokia handset comes with a dual core Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz. It is the first time that the Finnish mobile marker develops a multi-core Windows Phone handset.
Firmware: The Galaxy S3 and HTC One X hit stores with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. The former has Touchwiz UI and the latter has HTC’s famous Sense 4.0 UI. As per reports, Samsung is to update the S3 to the brand new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in a short period. The new Lumia handset is designed for the upcoming Windows Phone 8. It will have Microsoft’s Metro style UI with Live Tiles and other features.
Storage: The Galaxy S3 is available in three memory variants; 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. The device also extends microSD support for those who have more data to store. The One X only has 32GB onboard memory. Plus, the handsets respectively come with 50GB and 25GB of free Dropbox storage. There is also Google Drive for Google users on the devices. The Lumia 920 has 32GB of internal memory. Certainly, the device has Microsoft’s SkyDrive for cloud storage facility.
Camera: All the handsets sport 8MP rear cameras. Nokia Lumia 920 stands out with its PureView-branded camera that features Carl Zeiss lens and better digital zoom. It has a 1.3MP front camera. The rear cameras of Galaxy S3 and One X also do well. They respectively have 1.9MP and 1.3MP front cameras for video chatting.
Connectivity: All the recent phones pack almost all advanced connectivity options. You have 3G/HSDPA, Wi-Fi, NFC and GPS on devices. The One X and S3 have the advanced Bluetooth 4.0, while Lumia 920 has Bluetooth 3.1.
Battery: The Lumia 920 mounts a 2000mAh battery. Yet to be released, analysts are anxious to know how the battery of the handset will perform after it gets a dual core CPU. The Galaxy S3 comes with a strong 2100mAh battery, while the One X sports 1800mAh sealed-in battery.
Availability: The Galaxy S3 and One X are available in market today. The U.S. versions of the devices can be found with the major carriers. The S3 is available with all the carriers; but its quad core-based international version is yet to hit the domestic market. Meanwhile, Nokia Lumia 920 is only to come sometime late this year.
