Thanks for the many great ideas being discussed here but I would like to say to all my beloved and respected muslim bretheren that there is only one lunar calendar. Can there be many calendar based on lunar for different places? whether every muslim are compulsory to witness the sighting of moon.

the ruling is quite simple : when the moon is sighted , celebrate eid.if not ,fast the extra day.pretend you're living in a time where technology does not exist.we humans complicate everything.listen to the instruction of ALLAH and all would run smoothly.follow your own logic and x it by 1 billion ,you'll have a billion different opinions which would assuredly lead to confusion.so although your idea sounds amazing, stick to the original ruling of Quraan and Sunnah, which is a guidance for all of man-kind.

Reader from Pune is wrong. We had 30 days Ramdan here and there is no 31st date in Hijri Calender. Eid or primarily new moon is decided locally. Main Problem is hilal committee's are full of ppl who are there to hold a position. there is hardly any Aalim with mutaála. Because of the bitter experience with so called hilal committee; Ulema formed their own hilal committee in pune and we have much less problems since then as Ulema are more accurate and their network in local region is very good.

We should adopt scientific aproach for moon sighting. If science can predict exact timing of lunar eclipe for coming decades then it also gives exact details of moon sighting in any part of the world. We should follow science. As for Saher and Iftar time we depend upon clock or azan instead of going and seeing dusk or sunset by ourselves, regardless of hadith clearly saying break ur fast after sunset. If we can trust clock for sunset then why we can't trust science for moon sighting.

There is a hadith behind it (In prophet Muhammad (SAW) time, some people had seen moon on other side of Mountain, they had started celebration. When people informed Muhammad SAW, he told that let them celebrate, but as we have not seen the moon, we will celebrate Eid next day InshaAllah) which clearly justifies why Eid is not celebrated on the same day throughout India or any other country. We should obey our Mufti's decision depending upon city or state where people have seen the moon.

It is so simple that if you sight the moon celebrate Eid otherwise not. It is not obligatory in Islam that throughout the world it is celebrated the same day. The spirit behind this is to be understood. Whether you obey the commandments or wnt to obey your will

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barkatah
A very holy prosperous Eid Mubarak.

In India Kerala observes moon first, then other ciyies folllow. Simply follow where do you live. So simple that one can confirm the same from any local MASJID (Mosque).

Allah Hafiz.

Thanks for the fantastic article. I really appreciate the article I really don't know why this happens to our country. My question is why our Hilal committee do not accept the fact of the sighting of first shawwal crescent in many parts of the world on saturday's (18th aug'12) evening. It seems like they did not directly witness the sighting which goes against the islamic law (if I am not wrong). It is really sorry for the indian muslims that we cannot celebrate eidul fitr at the same time with the rest part of the world with true spirit. Hope next time around the concerned authority will not make this kind of silly mistake again.
