The USA wound up their excellent performance at the London Olympics with a memorable gold medal haul in the men’s basketball final on Sunday. The U.S. basketball squad staved off Spain for a convincing 107-100 to add one more to the gold tally of the Team USA, the overall champions of the 2012 Summer Games. Americans fought against the Spanish team in the superb clash with magnificent performances from its top players such as LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul.
The Sunday’s U.S.A Vs Spain basketball final was really a rematch of the same event in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It has brought a brilliant achievement for the U.S. of winning two continuous Olympic gold medals against the Spaniards. In Beijing, the Americans beat Spain for 118-107 in an exciting shootout. The victory for the Americans was only guaranteed in the final three minutes of the 2008 final. On Sunday in London, the same story repeated as the U.S. managed to pull in six points when just 3:20 minutes were to go in the game.
The Miami Heat forward LeBron James led the U.S team with nineteen valuable points in the final matchup. James dunk and three-pointer in the last minutes ensured the team yet another gold victory over the Spaniards. Members of the U.S. national team, though coming from various NBA squads, expressed their joy with dancing and ecstatic steps in the field after the Olympic gold win in London on Sunday. It was really a great scene for the U.S. basketball fans.
“He (James) was the undisputed leader of this Olympic team, at the heart of every late-game surge. He even took charge of the final duty on the championship night,” writes the Miami Herald. “It’s been a great run for me,” said LeBron after the game. “I couldn’t have scripted it any better. I had many dreams of winning the NBA championship and following it up with a gold medal. I’m fortunate enough to be in this position and to do this for our country.”
Besides James, players like Chris Paul, Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant also took out wonderful game to let the U.S. team win the gold medal. Kevin threw in 30 points and had nine rebounds. Paul, at the same time, hit a three-pointer when the team was just leading with only a single point in the final moments of the fight. Bryant scored 17 points to add power to the rally of the U.S to grab the gold medal. On the Spanish side, Gasol scored 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Another leading player Juan-Carlos Navarro scored 21 points and Marc Gasol made 17.
After the game Bryant said that they controlled the game with intense performance as they wanted to focus. “The closer the game got, the more intense and focused we got,” Bryant said. “We did a great job battling Spain, particularly with their size advantage. This is a huge accomplishment.” In the meantime, Russia beat Argentina for 81-77 to win the bronze medal in the London Olympics.
