Only four teams remain in women basketball at the London Olympics. The U.S.A, Australia, France and Russia are the teams that advanced into the semifinals of the event. The first semifinal clash – the U.S.A Vs Australia – is about to kick off at the Basketball Arena in Olympic Park, London. Basketball enthusiasts are excitedly looking to see whether the U.S.A can defend their fifth consecutive basketball Olympic gold. Beating Australia, America will have to face off the victor of the second semifinal – the France Vs Russia – to win the gold. The second semifinal takes place on Friday, August 10, 2012.
Americans are set to take on the Australians with a new thrust and energy. The team landed in the basketball team final thanks to a dominating 91-48 win over the Canadians in the quarterfinals. Diana Taurasi has been the leading star of the U.S.A basketball squad. She is able to reign over the field from the very start. For Taurasi, it is going to be the third straight gold triumph as part of U.S Olympic team. The player took out a stunning game in the match against Canada. The guard scored 15 points, four assists and three rebounds. She also showed an amazing performance against China. Indeed, American basketball fans are hopeful that Taurasi will win the semifinal match for them.
On their way to the semifinal, Australia ended the rally of China in basketball with a point of 75-60. The team played quite nicely to vanquish the Chinese in style. Liz Cambage has been the shining player of Australia in its quarterfinal clash against China. She tossed up 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Cambage was a powerful defender in the middle to thwart the Chinese from running into the paint. Well, “if the Aussies can get her good looks inside, Cambage will do damage and keep her side in the game,” says the Bleacher Report.
France Vs Russia; second semifinal
The second semifinal of the 2012 London Olympics will take place between Russia and France on Friday. The Russians made their way into the semifinal beating Turkey with a margin of 3 points (66-63). The French line also voyaged to the semifinal with a three-point lead over the Czech Republic in the quarterfinal. The score is 71-68. Russia is getting ready for the clash putting their leading player Becky Hammon in the front. For several Americans, Hammon is a traitor as she was brought up in South Dakota, U.S.A.
Hammon backed the team much to escape the quarterfinal challenge with a narrow victory. She threw in 19 points, hit five assists and even had two rebounds in the match. The French is getting ready to fight off the Russian challenge on Friday with the heroics of Dumerc. France’s advance into the semi has been largely supported by this player. She scored 23 points, made six dimes and had fours boards against the Czechs in the quarterfinal.
The France Vs Russia second basketball semifinal in the 2012 Summer Olympics will certainly be another great basketball clash in the tournament. The winner will have to lock horns with the winner of the first semi, most probably the dominating Americans.
