In beach volleyball final at the London Summer Olympics, the battle will be fought by two American teams. April Ross and Jennifer Kessy are to make their first Olympic faceoff against Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor. For the Kerri and Misty team, it is a matter of pride to get gold as they have been dominant in the sport for a while. But, in their final Olympic event, they look somehow weak and imperfect.
Walsh and Misty hope that they win the gold in their third consecutive beach volleyball final. With the victory, they have to prove that they are the best team in the sport ever. “We want to seal the deal that we are the best team that’s ever happened,” Walsh said after the semifinal win over China for 22-20, 22-20. “Misty has changed my life. I just love her. I want to win tomorrow for us,” she added.
Walsh Jennings and May-Treanor walked into the final with a notable victory over China’s Xue Chen and Zhang Xi on Tuesday. This victory is the 20th in a row for the team. However, they managed to get the win with some struggle in the semifinal. Walsh and Misty surrendered the first three points and fell back 13-7 in the first set over the strong Chinese opponents. In the second set, the Americans enjoyed a slight lead and finally had the victory in style, though.”
Walsh Jennings and May-Treanor Vs April Ross and Jennifer Kessy is going to be very interesting match indeed. The debutant American volleyball players made their way to the final with a victory over Brazil’s Juliana and Larissa for 15-21, 21-19, 15-12 points. Though they faced set back in the first set, they managed well to win in the second and third sets. American Olympic fans are now excitedly waiting for the Wednesday night final between the teams.
“I had a picture in my head at the beginning of the season of how I wanted us to play, and we are living that picture,” Walsh said. “But it’s not over yet.” Yes, the mission for the players will end on Wednesday night only. But, many analysts think that the emerging Ross and Kessy will take the gold in the event. The 2012 Olympics may see the end of Walsh and Misty who have won the last two Olympic gold medals in the sport.
The Walsh and Misty team is known as the most decorated team in the Olympic beach volleyball history. “Already the most-decorated team in the brief history of Olympic beach volleyball, Walsh Jennings and May-Treanor are guaranteed at least a silver medal. No one — man or woman — had ever won two beach volleyball gold medals before they became repeat champions in Beijing, and until now, no woman had won three Olympic medals of any color,” says ESPN.
Meanwhile, the Brazilians take on the Chinese for the bronze medal. As per analysts, China’s Xue Chen and Zhang Xi have clear edge over their Brazilian opponents to win the bronze match at the London Summer Olympics.
