London 2012 fencing women’s epee individual has become very competitive as USA team is ousted. Meanwhile China is expected to win (video). Detailed schedule
Fencing is not something that is taken as a gold prospect for the US team. Notwithstanding the fact that there are some very gifted fencing players in the US, but still they are no match for their competitors from other nations like China, Russia and even Italy and Germany.
As expected, the US team was thrown out of the women’s individual epee fencing. Countries that are expected to win the medals include China, Ukraine and Germany. China that has remained on top of the sport this year so far is expected to bag silver, though it is really premature to predict the result in advance. There are upsets in all sports and may be South Korean players too can bag the medal. But Chinese women have been most impressive of the lot and I am not sure if they will allow others to grab what they think is their fief.
Susie Scanlan is among the top rated US fencer and has trained very hard. But she ran out of luck in front of much more trained and better prepared athletes in the Olympics from China, South Korea and Ukraine. She says that she was actually inspired by Lindsey Lohan. A scene from the 1998 movie “Parent Trap” intrigued her enough to find the Saint Paul Fencing Club in the phone book. A few weeks before the Olympics while talking about her Olympics dreams she said, “When I started fencing, I set, I realistically set this goal when I, I think I first made the cadet team I was like, that Olympics. I want to make that Olympics and then the fact that I did that is very awesome.”
Meanwhile China’s Li Na is the most formidable contender for the fencing title. She is the winner of Women’s Epee competition at the 2011 World Fencing Championships in Catania besides having several other fencing titles in her kitty.
