They have beaten the best. Spain vs. Honduras Olympic Soccer 2012 match was very interesting. Here are scores, schedule, squad and standing of the teams. video
It was an unexpected shock, an upset that was incomprehensible before the beginning of the match. Spain vs. Honduras Olympic soccer match that saw the mighty Spain soccer team being beaten once again during London Olympics 2012 remained competitive till the end and Spain couldn’t convert their repeated attacks in a single goal.
Millions of Spanish soccer fans were expecting their team to come on top of the world and win against Honduras and move to the next stage. Had they won in the second match after their first defeat at the hands of Japan, the Spanish team would have progressed to the second leg of the tournament.
But they have proved to be the culprit of their own planning. Honduras is not among the top soccer playing nation and no one was expecting them to throw out a champion team like Spain from the London Olympics 2012.
Notwithstanding the fact that they are not among the leading soccer teams, Honduras has improved tremendously. Their team members are motivated and disciplined and this is is something that gives them confidence even against big team. After beating Spain, we can certainly call them giant killer.
Ramón Zelaya, a well known former soccer player says that his under 23 team is well prepared to beat even the best right now. “To play in this type of tournament, you need commitment, courage and tactical discipline during the entire match…The players also must be aware that they represent 8.2 million Hondurans, who are eager for triumph”, say Zelaya.
He says that his country’s Olympics team is well prepared to subdue even powerful sides in the tournament. “In general, the squad is consistent, but I’ve noticed some flaws in the defense…We need to strengthen the backfield to avoid a repeat of our past performances. We have to take players who are in ideal condition. Now is the time to think big”, says he. And to be true, with their last match against Spain they have proved that they are a team that can threaten the best and
But a Spanish soccer fan says that the defeat despite being a huge one is not that demoralising. “Everyone knows that this Spanish Olympic team is, largely, NOT the same team that won the 2008, 2012 Euros and 2010 WC right? The regular stars don’t usually play in the Olympics- it’s a time for young players who are just coming through to shine. So really, I don’t understand why it’s such a huge shock”, says he.
Meanwhile Jerry Bengtson who scored the only goal of the match has become an instant hero not just in his own country, but central America itself. He and his teammates are excited and say they are well prepared to take on their next competitors.
