New Delhi: The Crime Branch of RK Puram Police Station has arrested Zubair Khan, a resident of Shaheen Bagh, Jamia Nagar. He has been charged under Official Secret Act for spying for Pakistan and an FIR (no. 193/2012) has been filed against him. Following the Batla House shooting incident some years back, the South Delhi area of Jamia Nagar is again tumultuous.
36-year old Zubair Khan has been a resident of Shaheen Bagh since 10 years and is a property dealer by profession. He hails from Badaun, Uttar Pradesh.
Khan’s elder brother Mohd Tayyab, who is also a resident of the same area, informed that when his brother did not come home at his usual time, they went to the local Jamia Police station. Initially expressing ignorance, the policemen confirmed his arrest by the Crime Branch of RK Puram police station.
Residents of Jamia Nagar have come out on the streets, protesting the random arrest and roads have been blocked by the local police.
A dharna outside the Jamia Nagar police station is observed by hundreds of locals who blame the police of targeting people from Bihar and making baseless arrests. The crowd also includes members of Jamat-e-Islami Hind, members of APCR and Local leaders like Asif Mohammad Khan, Captain Ameeruddin, Mahmood Ahmad, Shoaib Danish and LJP leader Amanatullah Khan, who visited Jamia Nagar Police station to express their displeasure with the incident.
The Jamia Nagar SHO Satveer Dagar has responded to the public’s clamour and promised to consult higher authorities. Talking to NVONews, he informed that the police got in touch with them regarding the arrest only late at night. He also added that Zubair Khan was found with secret documents, albeit their authenticity has not yet been proved.
Meanwhile the protesting crowd has made commuting well neigh impossible in the area and has also blocked the Sarita Vihar main road leading to Noida. The crowd threatens to intensify protest unless Zubair Khan is brought in Jamia Nagar.
