Google’s newly announced Nexus 7 tablet is to displace Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet from the forefront of eReading gadgets. Kindle Fire has been dominating the market since its release almost one year ago. In selling the gadget, Amazon could even battle Apple, the world’s No 1 vendor of tablets thanks to iPad. Barnes released its Nook Tablet, a prominent 7-inch eReader tablet in market, in competition to Kindle Fire. Now Google’s much talked about 7-inch tablet has been announced. The Asus-built machine will be up later this month, Google said in its I/O Conference last month.

Here we analyze in what fronts Nexus 7 may pose threat to Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet. Google has indeed unveiled its 7-inch device touting as an eReader tablet with a low price tag. As per analysts, these are two important factors that led to the huge success of Kindle Fire. Here let us see the major advantages of Nexus 7 over its rivals.

Low priced 7-inch tablet: Well, Google has intentionally priced Nexus 7 at $199. The 8GB version of the gadget (remember Kindle Fire has 8GB onboard memory) is to hit stores for the same price of its Amazon rival. But there is even a higher 16GB version that you can buy for $249. However, in brief, Nexus 7 is a powerful 7-inch tablet that you can mainly utilize for reading eBooks, mags and newspapers and enjoying digital content.

Better performance thanks to quad core processor: Of course, Nexus 7 is to become the world’s first 7-inch tablet to sport a quad core processor. It is a major aspect that will distinguish the tablet from its rival like Fire and Nook. The upcoming Google tablet will be powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core processor that features 12-core GPU. Needless to mention, the high power CPU and graphical unit will make your multimedia experience with Nexus far richer and smarter.”

“I’ve long held the opinion that mobile games are best served casual but am quickly learning to love console-like quality titles.  Whether it’s the quad-core CPU, the 12-core GPU, or a combination of the two, I love how water effects, smoke, lighting, and other features get a chance to shine on the Nexus 7,” comments AndroidGuys.com’s reviewer.

Sharper and clearer display: Nexus 7 can bring your entertainment to life in an amazing clarity on a smart 1280 x 800 high-resolution display. The 1280 x 800 resolution is a great thing for a tablet with 7-inch size. Both the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet that have 1024 x 600 pixel display fall short to the Fire in this regard. Asus has designed the Nexus’ display with a scratch resistant Corning glass and you can watch HD movies with a more vivid, smooth and dynamic experience on the device.

Designed with gaming in mind: As per Google, the Nexus 7 is designed with gaming in mind. It is a feature that offers a clear advantage for the tablet over both Fire and Nook, which are mainly for eReading and enjoying digital content. Google says that with heart pounding quad-core performance and other features, the Nexus 7 is a hugely powerful tablet for gaming. The tablet is to come with over 600,000 apps and games on Google Play.

Conclusion
Google’s Nexus tablet has been in rumors for a long time. Since the success of Kindle Fire, there have been reports that the Mountain View firm is thinking about a 7-inch tablet. The Nexus tablet has now broadened the horizons of Google’s Nexus brand of hardware items. Apart from the Nexus phone, we have Nexus tablet and Nexus Player now from Google. Nexus Player is Google’s I/O conference demoed social media streaming player.

Why did Google partnership with Asus whilst they have acquired Motorola early this year?

  • Phil

Because sometime soon, a bleeding edge tablet (except maybe a 9″ or 10″ from ASUS and/or Samsung) will be made partnering with Motorola. Look for it 1+ year down the road.
Think of the patents gained by Google with the acquisition of Motorola Mobility. This will help Google to further protect the Android market.
While there is some talk of a shift of computer buyers to notebooks and tablets, I see the tablet market as more of an incremental addition to the computing marketplace, making not for just a bigger slice, but for a bigger pie. There definitely is an upswing on the number of searches through mobile devices; Apple owns the dominant share of that market, and although they use Google as their search engine, Google makes almost nothing on those searches. And in any event, the writing is on the wall for a proprietary Apple search engine. In which case Google’s mobile search engine market would, without heftier participation in that market on their, drop even further.
Partnering with Motorola for development of a next generation tablet would actually be a salve to Google’s other partners, such as Samsung and HTC. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Google/Samsung tablet in 2013. But eventually, and naturally, Google wants to own and have more control over the manufacturing process, which MM offers.
And the Google/Motorola tablet would be branded strictly Google, unlike the Nexus 7.
    Buckle up!

Thanks for the analysis Phil. So you mean that the acquisition of Motorola Mobility was more for governance objectives rather than for production. In order for Google to take the tablets manufacturing to a higher edge (the bigger pie in your post) they need to have the upper hand in the hardware manufacturing to guarantee more compatibility with the operating system. Google’s partners like Asus, Samsung, and HTC will have then to adhere to the standards that will be defined by Google/MM rather than setting their own, which will weaken the strength point of Apple.
