iPhone 5 rumors: Large display, new CPU, NFC & 4G LTE expected

Rumors about the next generation iPhone 5 are spreading like wildfire. The new iPhone will come with large display, new CPU, NFC and 4G LTE

Apple’s next-gen iPhone 5 is rumored for release in the second half of 2012. Apple is yet to announce the specs, features and exact release date of the highly anticipated handset. However, we are sure that iPhone 5 will primarily stifle Samsung’s new Galaxy S III. Apple fans across the world are anxiously waiting for the next version of the smart-phone. As per recent reports from UK and other markets, sales of iPhone 4S have recently gone down. Moreover, the iPhone 4S is actually a replication of the 2010’s iPhone 4, one of the world’s most popular consumer electronics products. People are waiting for iPhone 5 because they think it will come with a completely new form factor and design.

Design
The mobile world has changed entirely from the time we got the first iPhone in 2007. However, Apple continued to launch its flagship iPhone handset in the same design. Until the iPhone 4S, we have an identical form factor for all versions of the handset. As of now, most top-notch handsets in the market have large from factors and big displays. The iPhone series still comes with a 3.5-inch display and small size. The tech world is looking forward for a total change in the scenario with the next iPhone version. But right now have no idea of the possible dimensions of the upcoming iPhone. As per rumors, we have enough reason to believe that Apple will entirely change the form and design of its new iPhone.

Display size
After the iPhone 4S, we have received a lot of Android handsets such as HTC One X, Galaxy Nexus and Samsung Galaxy S III. At a glance, we can see that all these devices have large displays. On the contrary, the iPhone 4S has a small and crammed 3.5-inch display. Apple should bring out the next iPhone with a large display; otherwise the company will face critical challenge in the market from Android and Windows smartphones. Though it doesn’t need to be enormous like the Galaxy Note’s 5.3-inch display, but the size should become bigger. At least, it should have a 4-inch display.

As per rumors, the new iPhone will possibly have a 4-inch Retina Display. One such source even went on to state that a big display will be the major selling point of the handset. Indeed, with a 4-plus inch display, users will embrace the device as they did it earlier. And iPhone 5 can beat all Android handsets including the latest Samsung Galaxy S III.

Processor
It is understandable that Apple will be upgrading its iPhone 5 with a quad core A6-based CPU. Given the fact that the market has lots of quad-core phones including the One X and Galaxy S III, the next iPhone will have a more powerful processing unit. Indeed, as per rumors, the device will have an A6 processor built into TSMC’s 28nm process. If the rumor is true, the iPhone 5 will directly compete with devices that have Qualcomm’s S4 Snapdragon, Samsung’s Exynos Quad, Nvidia’s Tegra 3 or other advanced chips. Thanks to the improved CPU, iPhone 5 will feature improved battery life, better power efficiency, better wireless radio-support, cool operating temperatures and several other advantages, analysts think.

Other features
Apart from above features, the new iPhone will come with several other advanced features. The handset will possibly have a completely new UI interface thanks to the new iOS 6, which was announced at the WWDC 2012. Maybe, the handset will feature an SD card slot thus users can increase memory of the device using external memory sticks. Other much awaited features on the handset are Near Field Communication (NFC) and 4G LTE connectivity. Both are necessary for a handset to face the challenges in the market.

iPhone rumors change almost daily and it is truly hard to figure out what Apple will be pushing out in the Sep-Oct time frame. A redesign would be a welcome change as I personally do not like the back of my phone being made of glass. A lot of speculation has been that the back of the iPhone 5 will be constructed like that of the iPad, a welcome change to people like me. I look forward to a larger display but don’t see Apple going larger then 4 inches, Apple likes boast about battery life and too big of a screen would hinder it. A quad-core processor looks likely but lets be honest if they went with a dual-core and went with 1GB of RAM that alone would be enough of an improvement. Don’t get me wrong a quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM would be fanastic if not amazing, but it is a little overkill for a phone.

I have a lot of faith in Apple and Tim Cook and what ever they push out as the next iPhone will be a quality product and hopefully will be able to back up all the hype speculation has placed on it. With the natural progression and evolution of smart phones and with so many competitors Apple will certainly deliver and as always will have a “Feature” or “Gimmick” that NONE of the competition will have.

The one thing I do not want to see is NFC. That is a feature that should it come with the phone will remain off on my unit. Near Field Communication sounds great and is convenient BUT the security risks involved are too high and this would oust Apple from making a huge impact on the Corporate and Government Markets. With RIM and their Blackberry at near collapse many smart phone producers are chomping at the bit to be the next Corporate/Government superstar. Mass purchased business/work phones is big business and if Apple want a piece of that growing pie Security will have to be a priority.

I want to see Apple produce a more usable phone and tablet, more then an app holder and web browser but something that real work can be completed on. The Microsoft Surface ARM is showing us that it is possible to run full programs on tablet sized devices and that is where the Corporate/Government and Consumer emphasis is going.

Great article. There is definitely a lot of rumors stirring about and very hard to pin down what will actually take place with this release. My 5 wishes for the new iPhone are…4″ display, 1GB of RAM, optimized dual-core chip (A5X), LTE support, and a battery that lasts 8-12hrs with considerable use. I think those wishes are realistic and historically Apple isn’t one to make drastic changes, no matter what people actual want. Those thinking they will see a completely redesigned device are dreaming.

I also think the new dock connector is a hoax and I would hate to see the 3.5mm jack on the bottom of the device as shown in fanboy renderings. I just don’t see either of those features happening on this release. Too big a change and too little time for Apple to pull off with all the quality control their devices undergo.

And Robert is spot on, Apple will definitely throw in a few amazing gimmicky features that will set it apart. They always come up with something that blows everything else away. As for the release date, although an August release would be great, I feel it will happen in October. Ahh the waiting game.

Apple will probably do minor incremental upgrade as in the past. Slightly bigger CPU, a little more memory and a software update. Like the last few models. Ensuring that that the model only lasts the 12 months before being obsolete and force users to upgrade yet again!
Apple need to come out with a NEW phone to compete with the general market. They’re way behind competition especially in the CPU and display and battery life areas.

One minor question first. Why are we calling it the iPhone 5?? If you do a count this will actually be the 6th generation iPhone which will also coincide with the iOS 6 operating system so I think the number will be dropped like with the ‘iPad’.

Most certainly Apple will have to go with the market average and give the screen a boast and I think an extra half inch will be enough. This inline with the fact that they are in the process of manufacturing bigger/thinner batteries for the new model helps confirm that theory, now I actually like the iPhone 4S form factor anyway and have no issues with the materials used. This brings me to the form factor of the new iPhone which if Apple go by tradition should be released in the fall of this year, now since the Samsung Galaxy is pretty much an iPhone that has been ironed out a bit I would not be surprised if the new iPhone has similar dimensions to the Galaxy S2 but obviously better built and a more ‘Apple’ inspired finish.

As for the processor used I agree with the last comment that I think that having this whopping quad core mega quick processor in what is at the heart of it a phone is a bit silly as well as unnecessary consumption of battery and I think the A5 does a grand job running iOS 6 on the 4S no problems. Of cause for future proof a slightly quicker version of the chip should be installed even if it is the dual core A5X chip set at its designed clock speed of 1ghz with an extra 512MB RAM would secure any future developments and with the quad core GPU could easily run a 4 inch 1280×720 HD Retina display screen no worries (it runs the mega high resolution iPad 3 screen).

Storage memory, again I don’t think we will see any flash card slots since Apple are in the agreement that hard wired flash memory is more efficient than removable flash, the only thing I would like to see is more for your money i.e.: the basic model having 32MB the cost between manufacturing the sizes is minimal and getting cheaper all the time.

4G/LTE is almost a certainty and to me as been the main reason why Apple have been holding out until now to change their phone so dramatically since the 4 as it becomes more widely available. As for the Near Field Communication again with the addition of Passbook in iOS6 this is almost a certainty to keep up with the growing market of scan and buy choices.

Also remember that the rumour that the traditional dock maybe be replaced for a smaller slimmer magsafe style adaptor is also a welcome change and I am sure this would be to help make the phone thinner than the 4S.

Let’s see what apple could do without steve. i hope its not another failure like the 4S. If its good enough then I’ll purchase over the sgs3. Although last year the sgs2 ousted it.(4S) Hopefully apple doesnt make the same mistake.

I sincerely wish Apple tones down its “Samsung copied from us” chatter…the iPhone looks almost the same since it was launched, while Samsung devices come in all shapes and sizes. For crying out loud Apple !! Spend some money on your design team and get a better product out there !!
