Over 21,000 Bengal workers jobless as jute mills, tea gardens close

Kolkata, (IANS) As many as 21,570 workers have been rendered jobless in West Bengal due to closure of six jute mills and three tea gardens, the state assembly was informed Wednesday.

Replying to queries from members during question hour, Labour Minister Purnendu Bose said 20,669 workers were unemployed as six jute mills including the Birla Jute Mill and Hastings Jute Mills were closed.

He said of the six, two – Birla Jute Mills and Nadia Jute – were expected to reopen soon following tripartite talks.

He said 901 workers were out of job with three tea gardens closed.
