English fans haven’t been able to digest the humiliating defeat at the hands of Italy in the Euro 2012 quarterfinals. Both the teams played exceptionally great game, but failed to convert their attacks into goals. England had to pay the price for lack of cohesiveness in the final 20 minutes of the game as it once again met with a defeat before it could enter semifinals.
Italy on the other hand have improved their game with every match of the tournament. Their first two matches were draws, before they tested their first win of the tournament against Irelands. Their 2-0 win over Ireland brought them face to face with England in the quarterfinal stage where they faced England that had performed better during the initial three games of the tournament.
For around 120 minutes, both the teams played a superb game. No team was able to come out with the win in the stipulated timeframe. Italians attacked England with renewed zeal every time on many occasions. They were unlucky not to have converted their efforts into goal despite taking the ball so close to the goalpost. After their defeat at the hands of Italians in the penalty shootout English captain Gerrard said, “We have done the country proud, but again we go home with heartbreak and it’s difficult to take”.
Italian fans are upbeat following the decisive win over England. A reader says, “You can always count on Italia to be either in the final of a big tournament of win the damn thing. I don’t get why people still don’t like Italy, is it our great brick wall defense that has only conceded 2 goals in 4 games opposed to Germanys 3 and we only gave up 2 goals in all of qualifying rounds, Is it our magic pass master( Pirlo) in the midfield, is it our wreckless yet efficient tackling midfielders who can also pass and shoot the ball from anywhere (DeRossi + Marchisio), is it our wing backs who run up and down the flanks nonstop and can also defend and attack , or is it goalie who is nearly unbeatable at the International level, or maybe its just pure jealousy or hate that people have for such a historic and great football nation who never quits and always plays with passion, heart and class. BTW everyone said that Italy would get stomped on by Germany in 06 and that was IN Germany, but we all know who won that one. ( No disrespect to the Germans, just stating my case)”.
