Greek PM to miss EU summit for eye surgery

Athens, (IANS) Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will not attend the June 28 EU summit in Brussels as doctors have advised him to rest following eye surgery.

Samaras underwent the operation Saturday.

According to doctors, high altitude pressure could endanger his eyesight.

Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos will represent Greece at the summit, Xinhua reports.

Conservative New Democracy party leader Samaras heads a three-party pro-bailout coalition government, formed Thursday after the country’s June 17 general elections.

The government’ primary goal is to renegotiate aspects of the bailout agreements with international creditors and keep the debt-laden country within the euro zone.
