Mohamed Morsi wins Egyptian presidency

Cairo, (IANS) The Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohammed Morsi was Sunday declared the winner of Egypt’s presidential election run-off.

He won 51.73 percent of the vote, defeating his rival and ex-prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, Xinhua quoted the Higher Presidential Election Commission as saying.

The first round of vote was held May 23-24, with 12 candidates, but saw none of them won over 50 percent of the votes.

Morsi and Shafiq, who were the top two candidates, were then involved in a run-off round June 16.

The new president will assume office without a new constitution and parliament.

The ruling Supreme Council, which took over power in February 2011, has affirmed it will hand over power to the new president before by June-end.
