As predicted by us, Portugal beat Czech Republic thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo in first quarters of Euro 2012. Here are scores and highlights

They say that great players play great in great games and Cristiano Ronaldo did the same on Thursday at the National stdium, Warsaw in the Euro championship against the Czech Republic taking Portugal into the semi final.

This high voltage match was locked untill 78th minute but in the next minute Cristiano got an airy cross from Joao Moutinho and put his head to the ball. It was too big an ask for the Czeck goal keeper Petr Cech. Ronaldo’s diving header after once bounce got its straight into the nets. It was a sweet revenge for the Portuguese as they were eliminated at the same stage in 1996 by the same 1-0 margin.

Cristiano was booed and hooted after two goalless games against Germany and Denmark but then his fortunes started favouring him as he opened his goal account in the match against Holland after getting down by 0-1. I fact Cristiano got a brace in that game making his team victorious by 2-1.

Portugal has reached the semi final for the fourth time after 1984, 2000 and 2004. They were the finalist too in 2004.

The Portuguese will now face the winners of holders Spain and France on Wednesday in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Ronaldo said after the match that they missed a lot of chances.

In the first ten minutes Czechs were on the offence but soon the Portuguese reversed the gear and the aggression continued till the whistle for the first half.

Czech Republic’s Jircek cut inside in the 7th minute shootig towards the goal but it was deflected for a corner.

Ten minutes later the Czechs were awarded another corner taken by Plasil but Rui Prricio’s push was too week for a goal.

In the 24th minute Ronaldo got chance to blasting shot was well saved by Petr Cech.

In the 28th minute Theodor Gebre Selassie shot a dangerously low ball but the Portuguese defender Pepe cleared the ball brilliantly.

In the 33rd d 35th minute Portugal got good chances but the Czech defenders and the goal keeper Ceh thwarted the efforts.

Within two minutes of the second half Ronaldo took a free kick concede by Hubschman but it was blocked. Ronaldo missed another chance in the 66th minute.

In the injury time even the Czech goal keeper came forward but then it was too late.

    Ha its a very painful result 4 me cos I supported the czech republic to win, but it was somehow the other way round by cristiano Ronaldo, so so painful!

    C. Ronaldo has always been a great footballers. Inspite of the fact that there are not many renowned stars in the Purtugies side, except Nani, Pepe & a few others he performs brilliantly. He has shown this before, after his time at Old Traford, it did not take him time to take the mantle of leadership prior to his excellent capability in the round leather game. I still see in him the best in our time.
