Microsoft’s new Surface tablets – Surface RT and Surface Pro – have created huge hype on the internet. The software company has launched the machines with a goal to bring its presence in the tablet market, which is currently dominated by Apple. The tech world has accepted the Surface tablets as critical rivals to Apple’s iPad, which enjoys complete market dominance. The new Surface tablets respectively run on Windows RT and Windows 8. The former one, which is based on ARM chips, will be the most important rival to iPad. Yes, the Surface RT is more a tablet than Surface Pro with its low weight, less density and other features. Here are five reasons that will make the Surface better than iPad.
The Windows 8 Pro model – the Surface Pro – comes with Intel’s Ivy Bridge processor (Core i5). Microsoft has blurred the gap between tablets and the new line of Ultrabooks with the high power tablet. Well, the Surface Pro, with its 10.6-inch display, is also a threat for Apple’s MacBook Air 11-inch, besides the iPad. The device also comes with 128GB of internal memory, when the new iPad has the maximum of 64GB as onboard memory. The Surface RT also comes with a powerful Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core processor to defy the iPad with Apple’s A5X chipset. It features 64GB onboard memory to challenge the iPad.
The Surface tablets come with 10.6-inch screens. Apple iPad has a 9.7-inch display, which is enough for a tablet. However, a larger display with almost the same weight and thinness of iPad will be better. The Surface RT thus becomes a stiff iPad killer as it features a form factor that is a fraction of a millimeter slimmer than iPad (9.3 vs. 9.4). The device has almost the same weight of iPad. But, the Surface Pro is somehow heftier and larger with 13.5mm body. “Every micron matters within Microsoft Surface,” says Microsoft’s Panos Panay. It means that size is a great thing that gives an advantage for Surface RT over iPad.
Keyboard and kickstand
Microsoft is set to roll out its Surface tablets with a Touch Cover, which features of integrated keyboard. All tablet users are concerned with the lack of proper keyboards for the device. To prepare a document and compose a mail, physical keyboard is necessary for tablets. Apple iPad doesn’t come with any integrated keyboard, though there are many third party ones.
“The Surface keyboard will be part of its Touch Cover, which is connected with magnets and flips open. There will be a version with pressure-sensitive flat keys and another with more traditional raised keys called a Type Cover,” says Doug Gross of CNN. Well, the Touch Cover makes it easy for users to carry the tablet as it adds not much to its body weight. The Touch Cover comes in multiple colors that include blue, punk, black, read and others.
“”If it works well, the keyboard — which I got to inspect at great length but not actually type on — is going to be the Surface’s killer attraction,” says Slate’s Farhad Manjoo. “Lots of people get frustrated with the iPad because typing on it is a major chore. They want to use it like a full-fledged desktop, but they’re stymied by the input method,” he adds. Microsoft Surface tablets will meet the shortage with great keyboards. The devices also mount special kickstands, which you can use to put the machines upright to enjoy movies.
Apple has not yet included a single USB port to its iPad, which still depends on the 10-pin connector for connectivity. Meanwhile, both versions of Surface feature USB ports with the RT having USB 2.0 and the Pro having USB 3.0 thanks to Ivy Bridge chips. Needless to mention, USB opens possibility of extra storage and other capabilities.
As per a leaked document, Microsoft is working to develop an advanced heads-up display (HUD) for its devices including the Xbox 720. The SmartGlass is meant to come out of cover in 2014. The SmartGlass can also enrich your experience with the Surface tablets.
