Manny Pacquiao vs Timothy Bradley was the only judging blunder in boxing. It will not be the last either. Meanwhile Amir Khan has challenged Bradley for a third time.
Manny Pacquiao vs Timothy Bradley was not the first judging blunder in boxing. Though everyone is unanimous that Manny was the clear winner in the fight, but there have been many absurd decisions when it comes to the sport called boxing. If it is not a win by knock out, the decision in boxing is always contentious and fans and judges’ reactions differ by miles in many cases.
Many Pacquiao had beaten Timothy Bradley in all aspects of the game. He had hit him almost a hundred times more than Bradley hit him and the number of his power punches was also substantially more than Bradley’s, but still the ill-informed judges didn’t find him suitable for a win. They seemed to have their own plan and stuck to it. No critic or fan whether watching the fight in Vegas or on live stream even thought that the result could go in Bradley’s favour.
The silence following the announcement was complete with no one smiling. The only man, yes the man, who smiled was ‘defeated’ Manny Pacquiao who was an island of grace in the eye of Himalayan cheating.
But to be true Manny was not the first case of such blind judging by boxing judges. Marvin Hagler was at the height of his success in boxing when he was cheated. He was the undisputed middleweight champion of the world, while Sugar Ray Leonard had come out of retirement to challenge him and was a huge underdog at Vegas sports books. However, Leonard was the sentimental favorite as the most popular boxer in America, and everyone knew it—even the ringside announcers. During the fight, they predicted that everyone wanted Leonard to win so bad that Hagler would have to knock him out to win. Turns out, they were right. Though Leonard landed more punches -306 to 291-, (in Manny’s case it was 253 for many and 159 for Bradley) most observers thought Hagler landed more power punches and deserved to win because he was the aggressor. Leonard was pronounced the winner despite being beaten by a better boxer and fighter.
The same was the case of Amir Khan who was pronounced beaten despite coming out with excellent performance against Lamont Peterson of Washington DC. He was clearly on the winning side, but some sort of judging mistake saw him lose both his belts to a boxer who was later found using banned drugs.
Meanwhile Amir Khan has challenged Timothy Bradley for a third time and has claimed that he will knock him out if he agrees for a December fight. “What a joke we had Manny winning by 5 rounds. Bradley how about you take the fight with me in December after I clean up the 140lbs weight. If Bradley wants it I’m ready, he turned me down twice. After I beat (Danny) Garcia I will offer Bradley the fight for the 3rd time” said Amir following Manny Bradley farce.
