Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and his television show Satyamev Jayate are under assault. The outspoken actor who is hosting a very well-meaning tele-show Satyamev Jayate, is under attack from Indian Medical Association and other doctors who have asked him to apologize for his anti doctors’ comments.

Aamir Khan during his show on May 27 had alleged that doctors across the country are involved in malpractices that endanger the lives of patients. He had also said that these malpractices are also making the healthcare unaffordable to common people.

Indian Medical Association and several other state level doctors’ associations have said that these allegations are destroying the image of medical fraternity as a whole. They have demanded apology and have threatened to move court if he doesn’t follow their diktats.

Meanwhile a Nephrologist with Fortis Hospital, R Sreedhara ,has said that he has been under stress ever since the show was aired on May 27. R Sreedhara is the same doctor who performed the surgery on the wife of a retired army officer who was present on Aamir Khan’s show. Aamir Khan on the other hand has flatly refused to apologize. “I am very comfortable if they (IMA) plan to take legal action if they feel that I have done something wrong. Of course, the courts are available for them. My answer is no, I will not be apologizing”, says Aamir.

Meanwhile his fans are solidly standing with him. They insist that he shouldn’t apologize. A reader says, “Why?? We demand apology for the malpractices in medical services. My experiences with medical services is far worse than what was shown. Aamir Khan simply highlighted some of the evils. Kudus to him. Those who are requesting apologies, can you not go back and investigate some of the issues, instead of wasting your time on the great efforts of a true patriot?”

Another reader Ashwin Parikh says “Aamir should never apologize. MCI must withdraw their demand of apology. If not, their more scams and lapses will get exposed. Keep up Aamir”.

Yet another reader Hussain says, “Doctors should learn to take the show with a pinch of salt. Sacchai kadwee hothi hai. The reactions of the doctors were anticipated. I think it is the corrupt doctors who will object to the show. Whereas if any honest doctors too are objecting, then they should in fact support Aamir’s cause, as this will be a good chance for them to expose the corrupt doctors. How come the doctors who are asking for an apology from Amir were silent till now? Have they ever exposed any of these going-ons in the medical profession?”

In Kaliyuga AsatyamEva jayate. Gross misuse of political freedom of speech and freedom of press. Malpractices of some doctors endangers the entire medical fraternity. Obviously A K’s fans are solidly standing with him. In today’s India there will be freedom for carrying AK 47s. Ak’s show seems to be verbal AK 47s. Are his allegations have the general support of the Bollywood fraternity or the entire countries film industry?

By law Indian Medical Association has got no legs to stand on if they were to take Aamir to court.I dont see any reason why Aamir Khan should apology to Indian Medical Association, he has not said anything against all medical community. Infact to set an example he has finished off the show with doctors who are doing some good work.

    Hi
It was a bold step by the star to show the malpractices of Doctors. It is our constitutional right of expression and Amir khan should not bow to the demands of doctors .As what ever was shown are the facts and nobody knows where to complaint when a dotor shows negligence towards his duty and the patient suffers silently .Many laws are made by the
MCI such as the medical ethics law 2002 and so many more .But they are only on the paper and nobody knows about it.Any complaint made by the patient has to be taken into consideration by the MCI.But what is happening is that MCI protects the doctors .we should ask the MCI against how many doctors they have taken action ?I made a complain against a doctor where it is clear evasion of the clinical establishment act and evation of MCI act its nearly three months approx the MP MCI has not taken any action .It took a year for me to find where to complaint MP MCI director Mittal was raided by the lokayukta and assets of 100 crore were recovered .This itself shows what the MCI is doing .

I am a practicing doctor in UK and I saw the episode of Staya Mev Jayate in which Amir Khan mentioned about the malpractice by doctors in India.
Before moving to UK in 1995, I was in practice my self in India.
I am fully behind Amir Khan and I think what he has shown on the programme is nothing but truth. The medical malpractice is rampant in India and no organisation, what so ever, is willing to tackle this problem. I had experienced many situations within my family & friends where they have been a victim of medical malpractice; I can give you several examples.
Having said that, I think the problem is even deep rooted than we think. I do think that this is a social problem and overall it is our society in india is to be blamed. I do feel that the solution of this problem is not just the action against doctors or so but also proper education of our society. I still see people who are ignorant, not willing to listen the truth and feel satisfied when a doctor had prescribed a long list of medicines and ordered several investigation. Even today the society assess a “good doctor” who has a long queue outside his clinic or takes a fee of several hundred rupee or maintains a decent car or home….
Another related point I would like to raise is control on the sale of drugs. Even today when I go India, I can buy any medicine that I like with out a doctors’ prescription and I know of many “chemist shops” which are run by unlicensed chemists which encourages corruption and bribery.
So, I will support Amir Khan fully; I do think that this is a deep rooted problem in our society and public and organisations should stand together to fight against this practice rather than asking apology or denying that problem doesn’t exist.

Aamir: You have lost my respect for you and i solemnly vow never to watch any of your movies … It is one thing to raise a issue in media using your celebrity status & clout, but it is truly disgusting to give voice to lies and personalize the issue without checking the veracity of the claims, especially issues which are either subjudice or have been decided upon by the legal system. Lastly, it stinks of yellow journalism when you show only one side of the story without giving the accused the chance to refute the allegations or defend himself / herself … I would personally support any legal action taken against you for defaming individuals and truly hope you go down in history as a “villain” and not the “hero” your movies make you out to be !

  • SUNANDA DASH

Amir, You should not apologize before the doctors, who are actually docoits rather than doctors. The fact is known to us to some extent, but your programme revealed the whole story.

    Thank you.

  • inderjeet

I feel sorry for Aamir khan and for all those blind fans…you can not persude anyone if their mind is fully filled with prejudices. Even a judge listens to both sides before giving a verdict…Earlier i thought what Aamir khan did was misjudgement with a good intent but now it is clear to me that he lacks wisdom. I am a DOCTOR and reading the comments by insane people make me feel that if all the doctors are dacoits then there must be problem with the MBBS teaching only. Doctors supported female foeticide episode even that was against doctors but if you show stories like those u showed in your next episode, will clearly tarnish your image. Anyone who has studied MBBS must be beating there head against the wall watching that show with filled with illogical comments and stories. Malpractises do occur as with every other profession then why are u blaming the profession rather than the individuals. Can we call Aamir Khan a rapist because of Shiney ahuja…i don’t think so.

    To Mr. Inderjeet,
If you are yourself a DOCTOR, then you should have made notice that he never accused “ALL” doctors. Some examples were shown because that kind of issues are happening all over india…I’m not saying everywhere but at many places!!……what you think in 1 hr show, he wants to show those cases where doctors are not at fault?….will that help? Purpose is to show what malpractices are happening.
& since you are not one of those doctors who do malpractices, you need not worry at all. Those who are honest at heart, should not worry.
But there were some clear evidences about overly charged medicines, commissions charged for lab tests!…….do deny all that happening too. Its a show & it may have made some mistake but not everything shown in show is false. Rather that is the purpose of show…..to reveal the bad practices.
One of allegation could have other side but do you take challenge & prove all the allegations made by the show are wrong for whole fraternity of doctors?? Talk against the show only of answer to this questions is YES!!!
When somebody is doing some good, being supportive is our duty. Show is not meant to bring 100% of change but even if it can achieve 10% of improvement, that is the success for show.
& I’m no one to talk in favor of show but I’m only one of those who wish to favor any good happening in the world.
