Satyamev Jayate: Apologize, doctors tell Aamir Khan

Filed under: Life & Style |

Aamir Khan’s TV talk show Satyamev Jayate’ became vastly popular but is now gathering the ire of the medical community. In the fourth episode Aamir Khan exposed the infanticide of female foetuses and girl children rampant in India. Now the doctors are miffed at Aamir Khan’s accusation of malpractices in his TV talk show and are demanding that he apologise.

Medscape India is an umbrella body of 21 medical institutions. It claims that the representation of malpractices supposedly perpetrated by doctors was ‘rather sad’ and Khan should apologise for this accusation.

Himanshu Mehta, co-founder and advisor to Medscape India, said, “It is rather sad that doctors should be made the object of such shameless, unilateral scrutiny.”

Medscape president Dr Sunita Dube added, “Aamir Khan is my favourite actor and he should stick to making films. Surprisingly, no doctors’ body has spoken against Aamir yet. We need to stand united against such blatant lies. We are going to write a scathing letter demanding an apology from him.”

She cited problems faced by the medical community and accused Aamir Khan of showing a one sided coin to the world. She said that innocent doctors were subjected to assault and the pressures they deal with go unnoticed.

Kishore Taori, president of the Maharashtra Medical Council that is associated with Medscape, demanded, “Where is Aamir Khan when doctors are assaulted? Where is he when we give free treatment to the needy?”

In his TV talk show, Aamir deals with social issues affecting Indian society. In the fourth episode he threw light on the healthcare and malpractices in the medical profession. The show highlighted unethical practices, corruption and scandalous revelations in medical treatment. He brought out cases of corruption, insensitivity and cases of patients advised to go under major surgeries when they only suffered from minor ailments.

    aaaa… No?

Off course he is focused on the negatives. Why would he be focused also on the positives (that being everything is done according to standard). If it is, great. The issues that concern us are the negatives and that is what is in the picture. This just proves the sensitivity of the medical associations and that there is truth in it and that like everything, its all about the ego and pride. But when it comes to ‘doing it properly time’, anything goes.

I am sure there are good doctors, but most are badly trained and practicing in wrong/unethical manner.

Why should Aamir apologise? You apologise to the country medical association for brewing such unethical minds.

It was such a biased episode on the malpractices….
some concern…the cases which he showed didnt mention any institution r doctor’s name…but when he showed that poor can get free treatment under a scheme he mentioned the name of the hospital…???? i mean is it not a publicity !!??? other one is about that pharma guy, he mentioned his name….wats d use for that, if not publicity????

All doctors start demanding apologize frm aamir khan aftr his show speaks abt Malpractises.

No one can denie that malpractise is going on in this field. U think that doctors are only responsible for that?

From the education system upto government, all r responsible. Doctors have to spend money(in lacs) as well as his half life to b a qualified doctor. After that practise in rural hsp is mandatory otherwise have to pay amount in lacs to crores to government. After that all are expecting he have to do charity.,
why should doctor only? They dont have there own life?

i m nt saying that they should earn money in that WRONG Way. But if government provide good policies, facilities frm the start of there education, it will help to reduce such malpractice, isn’t it??

Doctors are still not safe in this country. At anytime every1 is ready to show them there power of BHAIGIRI.
Aamir compare the england and india ratio of how many doctors prohibited frm his practise. But he dont knw how many doctors were beaten by patient relatives in India?

I think he is not wrong but he have to reavel the other side of coin also.,..

    Dear Yash,

If it is publicity, then it is good publicity for poor. Poor can get inexpensive treatment. What is wrong in that. If any publicity is good, then what is wrong in that publicity.

We all know how doctors scare the patients. The doctors must understand that they are needed for social purposes not for their leisure purposes.

The doctors must understand that they are becoming doctors to serve the society and not for setting their own private companies.

The pharma companies and govt are equally responsible for this slaughter. We compare ourself with developed nations. They are far better than us. If someone compares the percentage then we are at the downfall not they.

Indeed the story shown is almost true.I suffered a lot, which will prove that the story shown is true.I went to pmch(opd ortho) for back pain treatment where whole diognosis is taken care by junior doctors. they suggested medicine but that was not available in the market. when I contact the doctor to change the medicine as it was not available in the market then the doctor call the MR(medical representative), he suggested the shop and the doctor advised the same.what is this (what is your idea regarding these suggestions by the doctors of Govt.hospital)

there are various examples in patna where doctors advice costly medicines and test despite cheap medicine are available.Doctors don’t use there experience by which they help the patients. they advice costly useless test don’t bother that the test is useless and it is very difficult for the patients.

    these are examples ……………………….

dear saurabh if u r so interested in social service why not try and put urself in doctor’s shoes. why dont u get up at 3 in the morning on any random day to “serve”
why dont u spend atleast 12 hrs a day working continuously & tirelessly and even after dat listen to the criticism of patients and superstars abt how u work.

then even after dat be satisfied wid d meager pay for such intensive work.
after u hve managed all dat den u say anything abt doctors.

and all this excluding d no. of working days without a holiday …..

S.J.ne drs par jo dikhaya hai vo tarif ke layak hai.lekin har sikke ke do pahalu bhi hote hai ye baat bhi hame dhyan rakhni chahiye.bhrashtachar har field me hai.Aamir ne sahi kiya ya galat ye alag alag logo ke alag alag vichar ho sakte hai lekin hame kuchh galat dekhkar ya sunkar chup bhi nahi baithna chahiye.

  • Gaurav

read the comments and before that saw the show, Mind u it was about healthcare and not “doctors” as quoted above by Mr. Avi
i dont find it baised, in 90 mins time, mostly all the sides were covered, no doubt things are going wrong and there are malpractices.

doctors are also doing their job for sure and no one is asking for a social service, its about the whole system and doctors are also a part of it, things are happening wrong which has been brought out.

  • rahee

Someone said above that Aamir focussed only on the negative side of the medical profession, that’s what this show is about, to bring out the malpractices being done in different sectors in the society. Further, he also showed doctors like Dr Devi Shakti who have maintained the dignity of the medical profession. Also someone was saying that doctors have to spend a lot of money to become one, to get admission into a college..he brought out this negative aspect also..and was pointing towards the governments policies (and not only the doctors) which do not aim at establishing more and more government colleges and hospitals. And if you are saying that you had to pay a huge amount of money to become a doctor and you have to put in a lot of time, get up at 3 am in the morning in this profession, so would that mean that you will let your patients pay for it? That you will put a life at cost to gain what you lost? You have chosen to become a doctor and its your duty to serve your patients well. You are not asked to do the charity. Be reasonable to poor people..so that the medical treatment is accessible to them as well. Also, if you want leisure and comfort, then by applying the methodology of Doctor Devi Shakti, you definitely won’t be poor..you’ll certainly be well-off. And yes, nowadays most of the doctors usually refer you the medicines of the companies whose MR they have their association with. Even in my place I’ve seen this. Aamir didn’t aim at showing the doctors in a bad light, but was commenting on the healthcare in India. He was mainly concerned with the policies of MCI and government regarding healthcare. And now everyone will be more careful after seeing all the incidents shown in the episode.

PADI JO NAZAR APNE BURAYON PAR, TAB DUSRON KE BURAIYAAN NAZAR NA AYEGI.

So Doctors you know who are the Good Doctors and Bad Doctors, instead of asking Amir Khan to Apologize you, I think its time for you to Apologize him and the country for knowing the fact that you knew all this time these facts but when you got to know that before the whole country raises fingers at you, why dont we kill the thought of the person who made us think about it. few of them have written in this blog stating that it was a Publicity towards some topics. I would say this is not a Publicity, in fact its called as FYI = FOR YOUR INFORMATION. So get your line straight, and be a Good Doctor. remember if you have to get admitted and get operated, it will be done again by a Doctor. so if you expect for a Good Doctor to take care of yourself, we expect the same and not a BUTCHER.

My father was attending 500 patients daily and returned home with just Rs. 30 or 40…! He never sold samples and treated all patients, rich and poor equally as per ethics. Once when a patient came with his child having high fever, a friend of my dad said, ‘doctor this man was here 3 times before and all the time gave excuses about fees’ Yet you’ll treat him..? Without fees..?’ My dad smiled and said, ‘when I treat him again and again without fees, would he ever like not to pay. He is really very poor. His family hardly have 2 times full meals. And his child is burning with fever…Would he still lie ?’. His rolemodel were Dr. Mayo brothers of America. They had a big banner on their hospital that it was not compulsory to pay fees here. When he died (my dad) every person from poor localities in our Amreli city cried. A self imposed ‘bandh’ was there and even ‘datuns’ were not available. Yet unfortunately, those who never considered this profession as missionary never liked it. Such doctors are eclipsed and money squuesing professionals are highlighted in our silly society. Aamir’s attack on such doctors and MCI is most justified. Billions of blessings and good luck to Aamir Khan. He is a egm of a human. Cheers Aamir…

  • http://ashweenparikh.yolasite.com Ashween Parikh

And one more thing. Aamir should never appologise. MCI must withdraw their demand of appology. If not, their more scams and lapses will get exposed. Keep up Aamir…

  • Shradheya Saurav

Apology!!! For what? If you are a doctor and you do not involve yourself in these malpractices, you don’t scare the patient, you don’t ask for a cut from referrals and pathology labs, you don’t push patients for unnecessary “basin” tests, then why the hell are you hurt? corruption for the sake of corruption cannot be a justification. “AVI” if you spent money on your admission, (sorry for being direct) either you were incapable of clearing the exam on merit or there is a major flaw in the system. People argue back even if they qualify the exams on merit they might not get seats as others would pay donations, try to think if you can, who are these others, this “others” consist of me and you.If both of us decide that we don’t want to pay for the seat, who will they give the seat to- the most meritorious as they have to run the institute. and why is this so difficult to achieve? Because healthcare here is not looked at as basic service to individuals or society but as an industry with a market value attached to it, if some doctors are calculating the price of a human beings life then AAMIR has not done anything wrong. Money no doubt is important to lead life, but should it come at a cost so high, that you view human body and its organs as signed blank cheques.Kudos to AAMIR,Doctors its easy to spot somebody’s flaw if its not you, try waking your heart, by the way for the apology drams, we have already seen too much by politicians, when they demand apologies from people who cite them as accused in a case in which they are under trial in the court of law, everybody knows how honest they are, so don’t demand public apology, it will strenghten the doubt of people, instead try resolving the issue….and plea don’t look at your patients as if they are the one’s responsible for your donation fees, it was your decision not theirs.

First and foremost…this is TV show …not breaking news…so the medical association or people who have such strong points of view on any episode should feel free to write on this wall.

Second – these are real stories that are being told.
Just watch, and be aware of some of the things going on in our country and society.

By showing some of the atrocitites the show (not Amir) is sharing with its citizens what is going on out there and perhaps asking people to step up and help out or help stop some of this

The good samaritans of course exist – but the hour of each episode focuses on the stories/situations that needs the attention….

  • Paramita

Why?? We demand apology for the malpractices in medical services. My experiences with medical services is far worse than what was shown. Aamir Khan simply highlighted some of the evils. Kudus to him!!!
Those who are requesting apologies, can you not go back and investigate some of the issues, instead of wasting your time on the great efforts of a true patriot?

  • dr ahmed

this kind of shows are PURE MELODRAMA. what do the producers want is some cheap, disoriented emotion to attract more viewers and thus more ad-money.if 90 minutes of tearful eyes was enough HEAL THE HEALERS, or whatsover, life would have been much easier for Gandhiji. everywhere in india, doctors are being assaulted, mostly for no reasons. this kind of provocative shows would simply inspire some more imbeciles.
