Apologize, doctors tell Aamir Khan

Filed under: Life & Style |

Mumbai, (IANS) An umbrella body of 21 medical institutions Wednesday asked Bollywood star Aamir Khan to apologize for accusing doctors of malpractices in his TV talk show “Satyamev Jayate”.

Medscape India said the representation of malpractices supposedly perpetrated by doctors was “rather sad” and Aamir Khan should offer his apologies.

“It is rather sad that doctors should be made the object of such shameless, unilateral scrutiny,” Himanshu Mehta, co-founder and advisor to Medscape India, said.

After highlighting social issues affecting Indian society, Aamir Khan, in the fourth episode of his show, turned the spotlight on healthcare and malpractices in the medical profession.

He highlighted unethical practices, corruption and scandalous revelations in medical treatment.

“Aamir Khan is my favourite actor and he should stick to making films,” said another doctor, Sunita Dube, president of Medscape.

“Surprisingly, no doctors’ body has spoken against Aamir yet. We need to stand united against such blatant lies. We are going to write a scathing letter demanding an apology from him,” Dube said.

Medscape pointed out that doctors were subjected to assault without any fault and many people didn’t understand the pressures of the profession.

“Where is Aamir Khan when doctors are assaulted? Where is he when we give free treatment to the needy?” asked Kishore Taori, president of the Maharashtra Medical Council that is associated with Medscape.

Truth has been spoken and Aamir need not apologise, i’ll rather suggest him to ask his team to do a special 3 hrs episode against these people who want to continue this corrupt practice at all cost and sadly even at cost of human lives.

  • Mihir

hahaha… these docs have not even seen the whole program. if they have then they have a hearing problem and should get themselves checked up. Aamir also mentioned about a few doctors who are practising the profession brilliantly. the malpractices are widespread and are not a secret, instead of rallying behind the voice of a successful actor with asocial message to bring about positive change in their profession; these guys are gearing to ostracize him. shameful you docs… get a grip and get yourselves checked.

In Satyamev Jayate there are some cases of medical malpractices around the country. Lot of innocent people find themselves cheated by these doctors. These kind of things happens even in reputed Medical Institutions. But it does not lessen the fact the great service to the the community Doctors provide. But if something are wrong they need to be pointed out and rooted out from the system.

I don’t know why the good doctors are upset. Aamir Khan was highlighting the bad apples among the medical profession. He also showed the good work being done by doctors such as Devi Shetty and others. I thnks Aamir Khan is doing a tremendous service to the country. Yes he could stick to making movies and making a lot of money, but I think he wants to do something for the country as well. Keep up the good work Aamir, and don’t you get intimidated by any pressure group.

There is nothing wrong in the T.V. show. The Drs must have dare to accept
the truth behind the curtain. In fact commission is a common practice in
our country not only in medical profession but everywhere including defense.
I am not agree with Dr. Sunita Dube that Amir should only stick to the
films, but we should appreciate everyone working against the evils of society.

Well there was nothing wrong in what he said. He did not say all the doctors in India do it. I can bet on it that out of every 100 doctors 7 to 8 are involved in these practices. Instead of asking him for an apology, they should support him. It very ridiculous of them accusing him for such a things. I am saying it because what he is doing is something good, they are no one to tell him what he should represent or what he should not do. I am not an Amir Fan.

    Doctors, surely you are joking.
Every family knows the fear you put into their hearts once they’re in the hospital. Shame on you.

i give a damn to whatever this body is asking Mr. Khan to do.
i think it is an awesome show that Aamir has come up with and the reason why these doctors are yelling is that Aamir has outrageously spoken about an ugly truth that we all know something about. i don’t know what’s the point of bragging about the nobility of the profession when even the doctors cannot be truthful to the selfless service that the profession asks for.
    so,
    there’s no point of apologising….

People/doctors who thinks Amir should offer apology, they should first ask themselves that whether cases shown in ‘Satyamev Jayate’ were not true. Are they showing lie there? Is everyone telling lie?
Can these doctors give guaranty that no such cases have/had ever happened?
If not, they should ask themselves, why is all this happening? Why no one ever has got any punishment?

Amir has not talked/shown lie in his show. We all are aware of conditions today. Moreover, even MCI head could not refuse allegations in the show.
And if telling truth is a wrong… Amir should definitely offer apology.

i think tht these doctors shud appologise to d nation n its people

  • vinay

It is the renowned doctors who gave authentic report of the practices which are going on in the country. It is the sufferers who gave their worst experience in the hands of medical practitioners. Aamir Khan did his duty as the true citizen of our great nation. Every Indian should be proud of Aamir Khan. There is no question of he apologizing to any one. On the other hand those who are involved in such malpractices must introspect and change their ways for their own betterment.

why aamir should appologize. you people who are asking him to apologize should apologize. otherwise your courier is finished. do not take it likely. He s not sachin who is great player but poor in returning to society. vande mataram.

  • debasish mohapatra

Amir has done a yeoman service to the poor.It was time somebody pointed out the malpractices. They are just milking a corrupt system like the politicians and bureaucrats. It is a systemic fault but who thought the people who swear by hippocrates oath can stoop to such low level. They need a harsher punishment because people haae no where turn to. these doctors are almost turning into terrorists holding the poor to ransom.I know a anaestician inja govt. hospital who just goes missing unless she is paid a bribe.doctors who do not even care to feel a patient’t pulse or bp before dishing out a 2000 rs prescription. Such monsters shouls be given life sentence. But before that a clean up from top down is a must.

  • k.k.singh

Dear Amir, we doctors are eagerly awaiting your similar heroic attempt of exposing blatant violations of human rights in police stations of India.

  • ksb

Request for doctors,Please come out of your ego and help country by forming community / group for identifying black-sheep among your group instead wasting your time in asking Aamir to apolize..
Let all help our country to get prosphur either by supporting OR keeping quite.
Note – If any one of the matter discussed in the show is proven wrong then Aamir very well can apolize to doctors.

Dear Mr. Amir Khan, “NOT ALL DOCTORS ARE GREEDY” “THERE IS NO PROFESSION THAT IS ABSOLUTELY CLEAN” “DOCTORS ARE OBLIGED TO SERVE BY CHOICE, NOT BY COMPULSION” Sir, I have been a big fan or your work, life and principles. I am also a fan of ‘Satyamev Jayate’. But I was shocked to see the episode on 27th May, 2012. You are an Icon. You should have thought well and done the homework before doing such a biased show. There are only two people in the film industry that are being taken seriously by the thinking class of society, You and Amitabh Bacchhan. So, when you givesuch a biased and one sided version of a story, it hurts. Speaking about such a thing on a “commercial” TV show is bad. (I am sure you have taken a big amount, only doctor are supposed to do charity and social work, not actors!!! Right!) I want to highlight few important points here. And yes I am qualified to make observations as I am a medical student. 1. Your guests and audience (the words were almost put in their mouth) said that private colleges charge a capitation fee of 40 – 50 Lacs for MBBS, you should have also produced some evidence of such practice. Like you call a victim in all your episodes, why not here? And do the same story Engineering, Architecture, Law and MBA colleges, do you think they are clean? Why target doctors alone? 2. You said Since 2001, government opened 31 medical colleges and 106 private institutes were opened. – Please notethat today in India, there are a total of 181 Private and 152 Govt Medical colleges. So the number is not as bad s you projected. Don’t project only thetime period which suits your story. Either give a complete picture or do not give a picture at all! And also, please find out how many of these private colleges are owned by politicians? 95% of Private colleges inIndia are owned and run by politicians. It is a bloody nexus between politicians and MCI. The corruption by politicians is to blamed for the mess, not doctors!!! 3. One of your guest (Dr. Gulhati) said that doctors ask for 30% commission from Pharma companies to write their drugs. That is baseless, over-the-roof and sensationalizin g the matter. That is as true as “Most Leading actors ask newcomers to sleep with them” or “Lawyers take money from both the sides in a legal battle” or “Most chartered accountants teach their clients how to save tax and also pass info to taxman on where his client saved tax”. I know all of you will shout “Where is the proof?”. So are doctors!!! I am not trying to sensationalize things as you did on your show by shading those fake tears, but just trying to project that allegations are easy to make. I know you will say that this was the opinion of our guest, and not yours. But you provided a platform for these fake allegations. 4. You compared the numbers of Licenses cancelled in England and in India. I must say your team is quite resourceful and please collect and compare following details also – a.Number of doctors beaten on duty by goons from various political outfits in government hospitals in UK and India in last 10 years, and also the number of people convicted for such crime. b.The Stipend (Salary a post-graduate trainee doctor/ intern gets) or Salary and accommodation facilities provided to the doctors of the two countries. c.The duty hours and working conditions of the doctors of the two countries. d.The academic and research infrastructure being provided to the medical students. 5. You said that the most brilliant students who take up medicine, should take it only for service to mankind, they should go to other fields if they want to earn. Why? Are we living in imperialism? Are doctors not allowed to earn and spend a good life? You were asking Dr. Devi Shetty whether he can do humanitarian work and Earn at same time? This is like asking Amirkhan or Shahrukh-khan their income and generalizing it for every actor in the industry (Even junior artists). Sir, just as there are only few Khans and Kapoors, There are even fewer Devi Shetty and Naresh Trehan who run their chain of Multi-specialty hospitalsspread all over the country. See what it takes to become a doctor and then give such “Geeta- Gyan”. a. 5 and half year of MBBS training and 1 more year of Compulsory Rural Internship at Rs. 15000 – 20000 per month. (Any other field eg. Engineering, Management, a person would become Postgraduate in this much time and start earning double the amount.) If one doesn’t study further, the pay at this step is 22,000 per month. b. After above 6 and half years of Graduation, 3 more years of Postgraduation, followed again by compulsory rural / Government job for 1 year or pay Rs. 25Lac bond. If one doesn’t study further, the pay at this step is 40,000 per month. c. Afterthis above 10 and half years, 3 more years of Superspeciality, followed by 1 year of Govt job or a Bond of Rs. 2 Crore. And the seats are so few with tough competition, there tends to be a gap of a year or two in preparing for various entrance exams. 6. Why only Doctors are being forced to workin rural and government hospitals after their study? Why only we shouldpay government if we don’t want to do it? The rural/Govt sector needs help of Engineers, Lawyers, Chartered Accountants and MBAs also. Why aren’t the Engineers sent to rural areas to design and monitor roads and industrials development? Why aren’t the Lawyers forced to work as Public prosecutors before they can join some big foreign corporate firm? Why aren’t the CAs asked to work in CAG office and various other government financial sectors before joining Multinational Giants? Now government wants that doctors should not immigrate to other countries without asking them. Why? Are the IIT/ IIM students stopped before they flee to foreign countries for big fat salaries? So, why us? What is it that government of society has done for doctors that they should repay? They bloody can’t even protectthem from goons while on duty. 7. You say that doctors are writing unnecessary and costly medications. Do we decide the price of a drug? Do we manufacture or give license to drug manufacturers? Controlling the price of essential drugs is a government job. We are helpless. Sir, its easy to point fingers. We don’t say that all is well. But all is not well anywhere. Its a different thing creating awareness about dowry or female feticide. But its entirely different to comment on such a technical and complicated issue without getting into the details of it. You have maligned the entire medicalfraternity. For every 10 doctors who are doing wrong, there are more than1000 healers. You owe us an apology!!! This issue is not as simple as you think it is! Please show stories which are unbiased and straight-forward. You cannot do justice to such an issue, especially after charging a whooping amount for creating awareness!!! (We hear that Amir has charged 3 crores for episodeof satyamevjayate in which he spreads the message to doctors that they should not make money and do social service!!! How sacred!!! I don’t know if its true, but well, it’s the season of allegations!) “We Doctors may be doing little social service, But at least we are not charging for it!”

Aamir Khan rightly done everything .I am a doctor . I know how much pain we need to bear to live with people expectation . I left practice because I could not satifactorily earn money, because I was too much emotional & kind hearted person . But I need money to serve responsibility . So two option left migrating to good country or join in other job .

then I joined a pharmceutical company. now I earn well no need to spent sleepless night .Now I come to know in details how so called succesful doctor fooling patient .Most of them having bussiness mindset . They all have evil nexus with pharmaceutical company and flying with families abroad (sponsored from pharma company ).Even Director level of top medical insitute run to participate cocktail party of pharmaceutical. Pharmaceutical lobby create pressure to Govt so that it not make any tough law to curb this .

So how MCI should stricly prohibbit this practice . (Remember Dr ketan Desai remove while he took few step against those pharma company not while he was taking bribe ).MCI is now diluting the ethics code made by Dr Desai made in 2010 to break pharma doctor nexus .

DCGI (drug Controller India ) should make a law – giving something to doctor is an offense to pharma /bio device company . But they are also in same line . Recently parlimentary panel on 8th May 2012 expose all ghotola in parliament how still health minister downplays it .

I do not understand when developed country like USA pass on benefit to its people by making FCA (Forreign corruption act )against pharma company why Indian Govt could not make such law to pass on benefit to poor people . An USA doctor cannot even take a cup of tea from pharma company without disclosure .

I realized to survive we need money & also same people measure success of a doctor by a money scale . Then also in my opinion “one should become doctor if his heart is full of sympathy and has no intention to earn money dishonestly ”

System need to be cleaned so support aamir with this vibration .

Whatever Amir has said and ahowed in the is all true. Those who are apposing him are merely trying to save themselves..

  • Ankit Sahu

They are asking where Aamir was when docs are assaulted and they offer free treatment ….. My question is,” Do they really do that?”

Greetings, If I may, I would like to offer my humble opinion. Mr. Khan is doing ground breaking work by spreading awarness in the country on various issues. There are good doctors and bad doctors all over the world the point of this show is to spread awarness and let the bad doctors know that someone is watching and they shouldn’t feel so free to do what ever. As Western medics have build such strong identity that anyonw who shakens this identity is not welcomed. I think doctors who demend apology should do some yoga and put their ego in place.
Aknowlegment is a first step to progressive mind.
