Often the busy youngsters of today forget until it is too late that it is Mother’s Day and they have not got their Mama any gift. A hurried gift snatched from the store can fill up the wrapping paper, but would not be an adequate enough return to the mother who does so much for us and lavish her most tender love for us. Moments with Mom: Mother needs a day off at least, if not every week. Make this day a DIY for all the family members except Mom. Make the family spend time around her so that she feels the special day and cherishes it.
Plan ahead when taking time out from the busy schedule and arrange to have siblings in the house. Make it a family time when Mom is not allowed to work. Bring her breakfast in bed, and make preparations for a family dinner out. Make sure everyone is fed (including the pets), for this is what she does everyday! Take daily responsibilities off her shoulder. Target on getting that one long-term pending chore done, that she just could not get time to get rid off – be it setting the kitchen cabinet or getting the washing lines in order (or even just setting a special bed for her favourite poodle!)
Mom treatment: Mothers tend to prioritise their time around their kids and family instead of around themselves. Make this day a priority for her. On this day – Mother comes first! Take the initiative to do the chores she would have done for you, and do something extra that she would not have thought of doing for herself without getting us all in prim order – like a spa treatment for herself!
Make it a day when Mom can feel she is the first priority in everything. She comes before your business meeting, before that final game of soccer and even before Facebook updates! Besides making sure Mom is being given the queenly treatment, make it enjoyable for her by taking off her shoulders the daily responsibilities (of kitchen and laundry) so that she can relax, sit back and enjoy it all. Top it up with a special spa treatment, a pedicure or a manicure for her by one of the family member. This ensures she is pampered and is surrounded by her loved ones.
Away but close to the heart: Some of us just cannot manage to be near our mother however we wish because of geographical distance or some other unavoidable reason. We can always make her fel special, even if we are not there to hold her hand. A gift voucher and special sessions on skype can give her a few hours to cherish for a lifetime.
Just as you would have done if she were near you, arrange for a family dinner or gathering where you invite all your siblings and family members close to Mom. Arrange for a skype meeting then which is uninterrupted and dedicated to Mom. For something tangible to go with this virtual get together, add up a gift voucher or mail her a family album set by you with all the memories of her childhood in one place. Mail it ahead in time so that you can see the glow of joy on her face when you log on to the skype meeting!
