People in general agree that TIME magazine breast feeding cover is poor in taste. Attachment parenting is an old idea and such gimmicks wouldn’t help it
TIME magazine’s latest cover page has created a sort of storm in the teacup. The cover shows a young woman with a beautiful body and rounded breasts, breastfeeding her four year old son while both of them standing. The woman is one of the proponents of what is being called ‘attached parenting’.
There are many people who have expressed outrage over such ‘sexy’ portrayal of a sacred duty of a mother. At a time when mothers are unable to breastfeed their kids for even six months, let alone a year or two, the photo of a twenty six year old mother feeding her four year old son, who in fact looks as old as six years, seems nothing more than an eyeball grabbing exercise.
The woman, Jamie Lynne Grumet, has said that she has faced ridicule from many quarters by openly breastfeeding her adopted child. She says that many have even gone to the extent of threatening her with calling police and getting her arrested as she was doing something ‘inappropriate’.
And by the way inappropriate it does seem. If she wants to feed the boy, for a four year old child there are hundreds of very healthy options and a nutritionist can help any mother zero in on the best food that will fulfill his growing years needs. While talking about her experiences she says, “The[re] are people who tell me they’re going to call social services on me or that it’s child molestation. I really don’t think I can reason with those people. But as far as someone who says they’re uncomfortable with this, I don’t think it’s wrong to admit this. But people have to realize this is biologically normal. It’s not socially normal. The more people see it, the more it’ll become normal in our culture. That’s what I’m hoping. I want people to see it”.
Breast feeding is a sensitive issue and making it an object of ridicule is utter nonsense. There are limits to everything and breastfeeding a four year kid openly and then putting the photo on the cover of top selling newsmagazine is nothing but just utter nonsense.
