Hyderabad: Within a month of the surprise victory of BJP in Mehboobnagar Assembly constituency communal clashes broke out in Madanapet, Saidabad, and Kurmaguda areas of Hyderabad on Sunday morning. Indefinite curfew has been clamped in old city areas as several houses and vehicles were set ablaze. Nine people suffered injuries.
Violence was reportedly sparked off by the allegations by some Bajrang Dal activists that Muslims have thrown beef and green colour water in the Hanuman Mandir of Kurmaguda.
Bajrang Dal men took out a rally in its protest from Hanuman Mandir. Incidentally police is yet to confirm this incident. They raised anti-Muslim slogans and started pelting stones on the Muslim houses. Ten houses were damaged while one house and 10 bikes were set ablaze.
That the BJP played its role in the riots is quite evident as the rally was led by the party corporator from Kurmaguda, Sashi Yadav.
Disturbance started early on Sunday morning as a large mob gathered at the Muslim-dominated areas. They soon went on rampage targeting Muslim property. They were armed with petrol bombs and stones.
Local citizens alleged that at many places the police remained as mere spectators and took no action against the rioters. Some people alleged that even Muslim women were molested and Bajrang Dal activists tore down their burqas.
At many other places police had to use lathicharge and fire tear gas shells to separate the warring groups.
Commissioner of police A K Khan and other officers are camping in the riot hit areas. Section 144 is being imposed in the whole city to prevent the communal clashes from spreading to other parts.
Influential Muslim leaders and political activists have visited the area and have appealed to the police to take tough action against the miscreants.
Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy and the Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy reviewed the law and order situation.
It needs to be recalled that after the BJP victory in Mehboobnagar the Majlis-Ittihad-e-Muslemeen once again warned that the Telangana movement would give a boost to the Hindutva forces.
What is strange is that several Muslim parties, such as Jamaat-e-Islami too is supporting the demand for separate Telangana state. The BJP grew quite strong in the three new states Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttarkhand. They were created in Nov 2000. In Jharkhand, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which fought for the separate state, got marginalized and in the last 12 years it could not rule on its own.
