LG has moved to the 5-inch phone market following its chief rival Samsung. The Korean tech maker has shown off Optimus Vu in a sort of challenge to Samsung’s Galaxy Note just ahead of the Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona. Going through the available specs and features of Vu, it looks that the device will pose threat to the Note, which has been there for sometimes. Well, the arrival of Vu further reinforces the claim that the much-hyped ‘phoneblet’ market is flourishing. Here, we compare the Vu and Note based on the details LG has made available.

Display screen
Unlike the Galaxy Note’s 5.3-inch display, the Optimus Vu is set to come with a slightly smaller 5-inch screen. The device is to feature a 5-inch LCD 1024×768 screen with a 4×3 aspect ratio. It will be protected by Gorilla Glass covering from scratches. The Note, at the same time, mounts a 5.3-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with a better resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels at 285. The multitouch display is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass layering.

Processor
The LG product will be equipped with a 1.5 GHz dual core Snapdragon processor and 1GB of RAM. Yes, it is enough to run a 5-inch gadget. The Galaxy Note runs on a dual-core 1.4 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 Exynos processor and 1GB of RAM. Well, both the devices will offer almost identical performance.

Storage
LG will unveil the Optimus Vu with an internal memory of 32GB. The company hasn’t exposed anything about the possibility of having a microSD slot for memory expansion. The Galaxy Note is there in stores with two memory options; 16GB and 32GB, plus a microSD slot for 32GB of additional memory. The Note grants better memory options for users.

Operating System
LG is to float up Optimus Vu with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. But, the company promises to update the gadget to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in a few months after the official release. We also found the Note coming with Gingerbread. Now the device is about to get Ice Cream Sandwich update.

Camera
Lifting tough competition to the Note, the Vu will come with an 8-megapixel rear camera that can shoot 1080p Full HD. The device will also have a front camera for video calls. The Galaxy Note is up there with an 8-megapixel 3264×2448 rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, check quality, geo-tagging and face and smile detection. The device can also capture video at 1080p Full HD. It has a 2-megapixel front camera for video chatting as well.

Connectivity
The Vu is a 4G LTE compatible smartphone. In addition, the device features HSDPA, Wi Fi, WAP and Bluetooth for connectivity. The Galaxy Note touts HSDPA (21 Mbps; HSUPA, 5.76 Mbps; LTE), Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, DLNA and Bluetooth v3.0 with A2DP, EDR for connectivity.

Price and availability
According to LG, the Optimus Vu will be available for grabs in Korea in March this year. The company hasn’t revealed anything about its international availability and price. Meanwhile, Galaxy Note has been there for a while and it has recently hit AT&T, which reportedly sells the device for $299.99 with contract.

Battery
Optimus Vu is to pack in a powerful 2,080mAh battery that can power up the large-screen device well. Galaxy Note features the standard Li-Ion 2500 mAh battery, which Samsung promises life for more than 10 hours of talk time on a single recharge.

Chris Smith of TechRadar says the Vu is an ideal gadget for reading books, watching movies and surfing the web.

“The name Vu is likely derived from the enhancing viewing pleasure brought by the screen size, which LG says makes it easier and more comfortable to read books, watch movies and browse the internet.”

Conclusion and verdict
Now, it is not easy to point out a winner in the possible fight between Galaxy Note and Optimus Vu. Since the latter is yet to come out of covers, it is almost impractical to spot a winner. However, LG Optimus Vu will intensify the battle in 5-inch phone market, which has yet another contender in Lenovo LePad S2005. The developments indicate that the tech market will get more 5-inch phones/tablets in future.
