Microsoft is slated to launch its next major desktop firmware update, Windows 8 by mid this year. In near future, the company will also unveil Windows Phone 8, the next update to Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, the smartphone version of the operating system. The Redmond software firm is yet to expose more details about both the versions. However, many interesting bits of information are always leaked by tech blogs. Here are a few secrets you should know of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

Windows 8 to run Windows Phone 8 apps
You may know that Microsoft is all set to launch Windows 8 with ARM chipset support. It means there will be Windows 8 versions for both ARM and Intel chips as well. It is almost certain that ARM-based version of Windows will run Windows Phone 8 apps. The question is whether Intel version of Windows 8 will also run Windows Phone 8 apps? Many analysts think that both versions of Windows 8 will run the apps, designed for the next major update to Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.

Nokia will build Windows 8 tablets
It is almost certain news that the Finnish handset maker will produce tablets for Windows 8. Thanks to Microsoft’s deal with Nokia, the mobile maker is rumoured to come up with a set of tablets with Windows 8 by mid this year. However, Nokia hasn’t yet unleashed any concepts or prototypes of the possible Windows 8 tablets. Will Nokia surface something at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2012?  Anyway, Nokia has so far driven a move in the market with a series of Windows Phone 7.5 Mango-based Lumia smartphones. The company may repeat the same in tablet market as well.

Skype integration
Windows Phone 8 is suggested to come with Skype integration. Why Microsoft wouldn’t make similar integration with Windows 8 as well? It looks that people mostly use the VoIP service on PCs rather than handsets. Let us hope Windows 8 will also come with the preloaded Skype app.

Windows 8 to get BitLocker enabled
Microsoft initiated its BitLocker full-disk encryption in Windows Server. The Redmond software giant is also to feature BitLocker in Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 too. BitLocker can defend a device form more malicious attacks.

Digital media apps
Windows 8 is to get a better multimedia overlap, says Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore. Both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 will feature the desktop Zune client for better multimedia experience, he adds. Indeed, the next major version of Windows 8 is set to feature better multimedia experience. However, it is not still clear whether Microsoft will integrate Zune with any of the present digital media playback solutions either the Windows Media Player or Media Center.

Cellular service providers will sell Windows 8 tablets
Wireless carriers will sell Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 based devices. Smartphones and tablets on the new versions of Windows will contain DataSmart cellular data capability. The cellular service providers can sell Windows 8 tablets for subsidized prices alongside Android and iPads. However, Windows 8 tablets will be far more cost effective for users thanks to efficient data plans.

Windows 8 to compete Android
Microsoft primarily aims to compete with Google Android with the its tablet-friendly Windows 8. Android has gained huge success in both smartphone and tablet markets. Though Microsoft’s other major rival Apple is also there, Windows 8 is set to compete with Android in a Google style, indeed. Microsoft has tied up with almost all Android product makers including the majors like Samsung, HTC, ASUS, Acer, ZTE, Dell and others to build hardware solution for Windows 8. In addition, Microsoft has announced an exclusive Windows 8 App Store, which will accept open source third party apps too.

Success of Windows 8 will shrink iOS
Yes, there are better chances for the decline of Apple if Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 successfully penetrate into the market. As some surveys recently said, Microsoft is going to dethrone Apple from the first place in both smartphone and tablet market. On its way, Apple will fall to the third position and Windows will soar to the second, leaving Android unchallenged in a new first spot, said a recent International Data Corporation survey.

  2. It is unlikely your WP7 device will be upgradable to Windows On Arm, or Apollo, or whatever they call it. Too different.

HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Asus and everybody else who makes laptops and desktop PCs must be breathlessly anticipating how much of a “leg up” Nokia has got on their Windows tablet. I’m curious too. Did all these long-sufferring low-margin partners just get thrown under a bus? Might that make them a bit less loyal?
