Huawei Ascend P1 & P1 S preview: two Android ICS handsets

The prominent Chinese networking and telecommunication equipment manufacturer Huawei has introduced a pair of new Ascend handsets at CES 2012, the P1 and P1 S. The Android Ice Cream Sandwich handsets mostly have the same specs. They mainly differ in body thinness, with the P1 S being the thinnest smartphone ever in the world with 6.7mm density.

What is more exciting with the new Ascend handsets is that they are meant to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the most recent update to the Google mobile OS. We bring to you brief introductions to the Ascend phones, which are expected to land in stores in Q2 this year.

Ascend P1
Simply put, the Ascend P1 is a 4.3-inch smartphone with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It is a cute smartphone with the dimensions of 127.4 x 64.3 x 7.7mm and weight of 130 grams. Thanks to the 7.7mm depth, the Ascend P1 is one of the thinnest smartphones in the world. The P1 sports a large 4.3-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors and 540 x 960 pixels at 256 ppi.

The Android ICS smartphone is equipped with a dual core 1.5GHz Cortex-A9 TI OMAP 4460 processor, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of ROM. For additional memory, you can depend on a microSD (TransFlash) card up to 32GB capacity. For connectivity with the network, the Ascend P1 features GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP, HS. It mounts a microUSB 2.0 port as well.

For capturing images and videos, the new Huawei handset mounts an 8-megapixel rear camera with 3264 x 2448 pixels. The camera with autofocus and dual-LED flash can shoot video at 1080p@3fps. Geo-tagging is also available to let you tag in your images with the location data. The handset also rocks a 1.3-megapixel front camera for making video calls.

Being major additional features, you have accelerometer, proximity and compass sensors on the device. For sending messages, the device offers SMS (threaded view), MMS, email, push mail and Instant Messaging. The device features GPS with A-GPS support and Java MIDP emulator and it is to come in black color. It packs a standard Li-Ion 1670 mAh battery for moderate battery life.

Ascend P1 S
The P1 S is the higher end version of the new Huawei Ascend series. The handset comes with the same specs of its younger sibling, the P1. The P1 S is different from its brother in two notable features, a thinner body and longer battery life. The high-end Ascend is the world’s slimmest smartphone with a thickness of just 6.7mm. Furthermore, it packs in a beefier 1800mAh battery for longer battery life instead of the P1’s 1670 mAh battery. All other specs including the 1.5GHz dual core TI OMAP4460 processor, 1GB RAM and data storage are the same on the P1 S.

“It’s immediately noticeable that Huawei’s high-end Ascend P1 S is the snappier of the two. Navigation through the home screens was immediate and fluid, with nary an instance of lag. This responsiveness is clearly a result of the dual-core TI OMAP4460 CPU powering the phones, clocked at 1.5GHz and complemented by 1GB RAM,” says Engadget’s Joseph Volpe, who laid his hands on the handsets at CES 2012 in Las Vegas.

Price and availability
Huawei has not exposed any key specifics of the new Ascend models. Regarding release, the device will come to light in April this year in global markets including China, Middle East, Asia, Europe, North America and Australia. No details are available about the pricing of the devices, however.

Sum-up
With the new Ice Cream Sandwich-based Ascend smartphones, Huawei clearly aims to ensure its presence in the global smartphone market. The company, which has been a leading OEM for major tech makers in the world, has recently launched a set of waterproof smartphones, tablets and other devices too. Indeed, the company is also a partner of Microsoft to produce hardware solutions for its Windows Phone OS platform. As a whole, it might be trying to make some impact in the global tech market with the new line of Ascend handsets.
