Washington DC (NVONews) The National Defense Authorization Act has a new provision. And this provision is being termed as a piece of senseless legislation that has every potential that will ruin the US and destroy the very fabric of freedom that is enshrined in US Constitution. People are outraged over the Defense Authorization Act’s new provision and many have said they would oppose it tooth and nail and going to the extent of ensuring that the representatives who voted for it are defeated in next elections.
The National Defense Authorization Act was passed with such a huge majority that looks impossible in any circumstance. It was passed by 93-7 and it looks that there was no formidable opposition to such a senseless legislation.
Under the new proposed law, that may be vetoed by President Obama, will give armed forces overriding freedom to detain anyone on charges of terrorism and keep him in detention indefinitely without taking him or her to a civil court.
To be true, the initial proceeding on this draconian legislation were top secret, with special emphasis being put on the fact that civil right organizations and media don’t get to know anything about it. The two most well known proponents of the act are John McCain and Carl Levin and both have said that they will ensure that the legislation becomes a reality.
The new provision allows the military to keep someone under indefinite detention for supporting or working for Al Qaeda or other terrorist organizations. But who would decide as to who is an Al Qaeda sympathizer or a Taliban supporter. In the absence of a civil court in the whole issue, this has to be decided by the officer who has detained the suspect in the first place. Many say that it is absurd that the world Taliban has been included in the list as Taliban have been never known to have committed any act of terrorism or sabotage outside Afghanistan or to some extent in Pakistan.
An outraged reader has this to say, “I hate to the be the bearer of bad news but if you’re a civil libertarian who cares about the eroding of our rights, then The President is not your friend. I know it may seem like he is because he gives nice speeches and campaigned as a liberal, but over the past three years his record is on par with, if not, worse than Bush on many of the fundamental issues involving civil liberties”.
American Civil Liberties Union in a scathing attack against the new provision denounced it saying, “The provisions – which were negotiated by a small group of members of Congress, in secret, and without proper congressional review – are inconsistent with fundamental American values embodied in the Constitution…The ACLU is urging Congress to vote against any and all efforts to send indefinite detention legislation or unlimited worldwide war authority to the White House. And, if it gets that far, President Obama should follow through on his threat to veto the bill.
A commentator while writing on the issue says, “The detainee provisions are apparently intended by their drafters to provide tough counterterrorism powers, but in practice they could have a detrimental impact on U.S. counterterrorism operations…Any president–Democrat or Republican–would object to legislation that interferes this way with his flexibility in conducting the war against al-Qaeda”.
Shortlink:
To the idiot reader that stated that the President is for this bill needs to get his head out of his rear-end.
Also this bill is atrocious and needs to be burned.

what has the president done for us so far besides appointing bankers and wall street officials to powerful government positions, allowing for trillions of dollars in bailouts of the banks and other corporations, and giving them tax breaks? i don’t want to know what other terrorist approaches he has in mind for the american people, but this act is without a doubt treason to the people!

This bill is absolutely ridiculous. How can the US complain about human
right practices, war crimes, and other illegal acts in foreign lands,
when they try to severely hinder the rights of their own citizens.

This stoy misses the REAL problem. There are several groups of individuals that the current White House seems to hate. These groups susspected of being potential terrorists are listed by the Department of Homeland Security. At the top of the list are what it terms radical Christians. People like me who are former military, currently Christian and right wing in my political beliefs. Yes, I spent 1980-1985 defeating the Soviets and now it looks to me that my own country wants to put me up as a possible terrorist. See the DOHS does not differentiate between a normal U.S citizen and an Islamist terrorist. I know that John McCain does not think that will be a problem but I do. After all who is the commander in chief???? If the Military can now arrest anyone it wants without charges or a trial that means whomever the President does not like could be arrested under suspicion. If he interprets this as going after Christians or anybody else he wants to go after, what’s to stop him???? Not the court of law. This bill is unconstitutional as it takes away our right to have a day in court. We are not subject to the military UCMJ. I DO NOT ACCEPT THIS BILL and will support the President if he vetos it and I hope he will or we are all going to have to shut up or be hauled off to an undisclosed military prison camp without charges for an indefinate period of time. And that is something that McCain as a former POW should never have propossed. I refuse to give up my freedom for security. Notify your reps!!! I have, his name is John McCain and he is NOT getting my next vote,,,,if I am still free come the next election day.
