Diwali garbage pile reach 1,000 tonnes: MCD
If you thought Diwali was just about bright lights, delicious sweets, exciting fireworks and pleasant gatherings among relatives and friends, then you might want to look below the lights. Diwali comes with its own baggage – in the form of torn gift wrappers, heaps of burnt out firecrackers, empty sweet boxes, and a headache for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
This Thursday, the very next-day after Diwali celebrations, MCD reported that post-Diwali garbage of the city this time 1,000 tonnes. This is a production that beat any other day of the year..
MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur said, “The average quantity of waste generated in Delhi is approximately 6,500 to 7,000 metric tonnes; the waste generated on Diwali day is 8,000 metric tonne.”
The civic agency claimed its sweepers work night and day during Diwali to minimize the waste.
“The safai karamcharis work day and night around Diwali to ensure that the roads are clean,” Mathur said.
Besides, burnt firecrackers, and gift wrappers, waste is also generated due to construction and renovation work as people tend to renovate their houses or complete construction work before the festival.
The MCD is India’s largest civic agency. It handles 96 percent of Delhi’s land area and provides services to 98% of the national capital’s over 16 million population.
