Shimla: Himachal Pradesh would soon be setting up a State Centre for Climate Change, Disaster Management and Snow and Glacier Studies for chalking out climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and to enhance state’s preparedness for natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, glaciers lake outbursts, flash floods etc. He said, besides State Resource Information Centre to serve as a central repository for all databases on environment, natural resources and climate change would also be established. This was revealed by Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister, while delivering his address in an International Conference on Environment and Climate Change organized by the World Bank and Government of Costa Rica at San Jose The National Capital of Costa Rica in Central America last evening.
Chief Minister said that the Environment Master Plan formulation in assistance with World Bank was nearly complete wherein spatial vulnerability assessment, sectoral guidelines for environmental protection formulation etc. had been incorporated. He said that the State was working further in developing the tools and methodologies for green accounting in state planning and budget processes. He said that the State was inventing upon Green House Gases emissions for assessing Carbon Footprints.
Prof. Dhumal said that an integrated and comprehensive approach towards building a sustainable and climate resilient economy had been developed. He said that the State had taken a lead by involving public at large at all levels and state was endeavouaring to make environment protection an integral part of developmental process. He said that environment happened to be a living heritage and its degradation a sacrilege to the people of Himachal Pradesh thereby triggering change in life styles of people. He underlined the need to save Himalayas since it had direct upon the daily life of people living in Himalayan States.
