Himachal to Introduce Grass Skiing
Shimla: Atal Behari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, would soon introduce ‘Grass Skiing’, at the world famous Solang Nullah gradual and ideal slopes in Manali to add to adventure sports activities, for the skiers of the State likely by the next summer season. This was revealed by Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister, in a meeting here today.
Chief Minister said that the Institute was undertaking various adventure sports activities through experts in the field. He said that Grass Skiing was a new adventure sport and was being introduced for the first time in the Country. He said that Alpine Skiers would be capable to undertake the new sport on the grass slopes at the higher altitude, instead of snow. He said that the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had agreed to provide a sum of Rs. one crore under National Sports Development Fund for the promotion of Grass Skiing activity in the State.
Prof. Dhumal said that Alpine Skiing was favourite with the youth and the State was proud of producing skiers of world standard who represented the country in different international level winter sports competitions and earned laurel for the country, state and the Institute. Foreign experts had also been visiting the Institute to impart latest training to the youth undergoing different courses. He said that efforts would be made to grow grass tuffs to develop various identified slopes adding that such events would not only provide an opportunity to the skiers for practicing and conditioning in off-season but also optimize tourism potential.
