Chronic or persistent pain leads to serious disabilities

Aligarh: Prof. H.D. Pandey, Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Incharge Pain Clinic at G S U M Medical College, Kanpur said that the fact that unlike acute pain which is only a symptom of underlying injury; chronic or persistent pain is a type of disease condition which itself leads to serious disabilities. Prof. Pandey was delivering lecture on management of chronic pain in different types of conditions i.e. back pain, osteoarthritis, restless leg syndrome, headache and fibromyalgia at the Department of Anaesthesiology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University. He said that the management of chronic pain is totally different from acute pain.

Prof. Pandey said that the acute pain can be treated with NSAIDs (Non-steroidal and Anti Inflammatory Drugs) and opioids while in chronic pain these drugs are not very effective, instead the drugs like tramadol, paracetamol and neuropathic drugs like gabapention and pregabalin are found to show better results in the management of chronic pain. He also emphasized on the role of psychologists and physiologists in the management of such type of patients as they are often depressed and the ultimate goal in the management of patients suffering from chronic pain is to improve their quality of life.

Dr. Pandey also expressed concern on the abuse of analgesics by patients suffering from chronic pain conditions as these patients are often kept on taking pain killers for months or years without consulting the doctor which ultimately lead to adverse effects on their health.
