Rodrigues inaugurates block-D of Government Medical College & Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh

Chandigarh: As part of the programmes for upgrading and modernizing the healthcare infrastructure in the Union Territory, Chandigarh, the Punjab Governor and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, Gen. (Retd.) S.F. Rodrigues, PVSM VSM today inaugurated Block-D of the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, here today. Completed at a cost of Rs. 21 crores, this five storey building covering a total area of 2,78,000 sq ft., has been equipped with complete healthcare infrastructure and will house the departments of Radiology, Blood Bank, ENT, Ophthalmology, orthopedics, Radiotherapy, Dentistry, Gynae, general medicine, anesthesiology and Psychiatry etc.

Accompanied by Home Secretary, Mr. Ram Niwas, Finance Secretary, Mr. Sanjay Kumar and Director, GMCH, Mr. Raj Bahadur, General Rodrigues went round the complex, checked the facilities in every service block and discussed the other functional requirements with the faculty to make the system more efficient and serviceoriented.

During his visit to the Blood Bank, he asked the Home Secretary to institutionalize a monitoring system of the blood banks in the City to ensure their proper functioning and better service to the needy and poor patients to meet their blood needs. He also enquired about the eye and other organ donation facility in the hospital and the need to popularize this concept through general awareness and motivation. He also discussed with the director and other faculty members the shortcomings and other problems and assured to take up the issues with the Health Ministry, Government of India for their speedy expedition.

Addressing the medical and paramedical staff on the occasion, General Rodrigues said that with the addition of D-Block and E-Block on which the construction work is on fast track, the GMCH will be a ‘Center of Excellence’ with world class medical facilities. He said that Chandigarh caters to the healthcare needs of the whole region and there is a need of further supplementing the health facilities to provide quality service to all the patients. He impressed upon the doctors and Para-medical staff to work with commitment , compassion & sincerity and ensure best possible treatment to each patient on arrival, thereby contributing to raise the quality of medical and healthcare at all levels.

He called for a systematic approach and comprehensive healthcare programmes by harmonizing all services and emphasized the need of optimal utilization of the space and infrastructure in the hospital for further expanding the services.

Dr. Raj Bahadur, Director, GMCH, while speaking on the occasion expressed his gratitude to the Administrator for taking prompt action on the needs and requirements of the hospital. He assured that the medical fraternity and other functionaries will make sincere efforts for ensuring high quality patient care in the hospital. He also highlighted the various programmes to be taken up in the near future for bringing further improvement in the healthcare network in the hospital.
