Himachal takes up the matter of setting up of IIT in State with PM
New Delhi: Subsequent to the announcement of P. Chidambaram, Union Finance Minister on behalf of Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister regarding opening of Indian Institute of Technology in Himachal Pradesh during his visit to the State on 2nd October, 2007, Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister has once again taken up the matter with the Prime Minister to speed up the process for setting up of the institute which would benefit the students of the State and surrounding regions.
Prof. Dhumal said that State Government is willing to provide all the facilities to start the new IIT at a temporary location till infrastructure for IIT is created and added that it can be started at NIT Hamirpur (Himachal Pradesh) or IIT Roorkee (UP) for the time being.
Chief Minister sought intervention of the Prime Minister for starting the IIT in Himachal Pradesh from this year as has been done in case of other States. He said that Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development had informed the State about the decision taken in principal to locate one of the new IITs to be established during 11th Plan in Himachal Pradesh subject to the State Government offering 500-600 acres of land free of cost. Himachal Pradesh Government has offered the land measuring 530 acres in district Mandi for setting up of the prestigious institution, he added.
