Heritage walk in the Mani Majra Fort

mar2.jpgChandigarh: A Heritage walk was organized in the Mani Majra Fort by the INTACH Chandigarh Chapter today. Adviser to the UT Administrator, Mr. Pradip Mehra was the chief guest on the occasion. On the occasion, Adviser said that tourism is very important as it boosts the economy. But also important is to appreciate our own history, culture and heritage. Preserving our past is essential as every brick has an answer written on it which would help everybody to understand and feel the importance of their culture and heritage, he added.

Mr. Mehra further said that Chandigarh Administration has embarked upon preserving its modern heritage which is approximately 50 years old and is also planning to bring it in the list of UNESCO’s list of Heritage City. He further added

there is a need to bring back the glory of the Mani Majra Fort which it had 350 years back. Adviser said that Administration is committed to preserve the old and rich heritage of the city, in a way that encourages people to know about their grand and prestigious past. Mr. Mehra also gave full assurance of restoring the true beauty of the monument. On the occasion, Convener, INTACH, Chandigarh Chapter, Mr. V.K. Kapoor said that Chandigarh is growing at a great pace as a big tourist destination all over the world. Emphasising on the Younger generations he said that they should know what heritage is and then take initiatives for preserving and restoring this beauty.

Director Tourism and an active member of INTACH Chandigarh Chapter, Mr. Vivek Atray on the occasion told that this is a group of about 120 members comprising of senior government officials, judges, intellectuals, architects artists who are striving for highlighting and preserving the heritage in the city. He also revealed it was the initiative of INTACH which highlighted the Bheema Devi Temple in Pinjore and Jayanti Devi in Punjab as the rich and old heritage. With the walk a sketching competition was also being organized with participants from College of Art and Architecture, Chandigarh. Adviser gave away the prizes to the winners of the competition. Robin got the first prize, Amrit and Ankit received second and third positions respectively.
