General Rodrigues inaugurates telemedicine project in Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: Aiming to help needy patients to avail the expert advice of the Doctors of specialized fields in PGI and ensuring them high-quality medical services, the Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, Gen.

(Retd.) S.F. Rodrigues, PVSM VSM, today launched a Telemedicine Project, with state-of-art facilities at Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh. Delivering his inaugural address, General Rodrigues appreciated the initiative and asked the Director of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, to take early steps for linking the five polyclinics set up in the Union Territory, with this project to help the Doctors and patients for managing clinical problems in these peripheral institutions. He said that poor patients come to these polyclinics with no means of transport and no access to diagnostic centers for medical & clinical investigations, like x-ray and laboratory tests and this facility can benefit them greatly. He also told them to link local colleges and schools with this telemedicine facility in a phased manner, to educate our students about basic healthcare practices, through interactive sessions addressed by the experts and specialists in different faculties. He also asked the management of the College to strengthen the physiotherapy processes and procedures through this modern technological advancement.

Making a forceful plea to the members of the medical fraternity to strengthen their partnerships in conquering human pain with deep concern and expand their reach to the people, General Rodrigues said that since independence, the healthcare network has grown at a spectacular pace and the need is to optimally utilize it in areas where it is most needed. “You are to act as instruments of change and work in a coordinated manner to utilize this facility as a tool for benefiting needy people“. He said that the healthcare network in the GMCH, is being further expanded with the setting up of a Trauma Center with the required infrastructural facilities. He assured that the Administration will provide all help and support to the medical fraternity, in their endeavour to provide medical relief to all, especially to the vulnerable disadvantaged sections of society.

Interacting with Dr. K.K. Talwar, Director PGI through Telecommunication Network, complemented him for linking GMCH with PGI through this facility and asked him to further streamline the systems by increasing the outreach and cumulative impact with the focus on rural areas and urban slums. He told him that the PGI, being an institute of national character must concentrate on tertiary healthcare and research work and the remaining primary and secondary level operational services sector must be the responsibility of UT hospitals including GMCH, Sector 32 Super Specailty Hospital in Sector 16 and other community health centers located in the City.

Dr. Raj Bahadur, Director Principal of GMCH, Sector 32 in his welcome address said that this Telemedicine facility will be helpful in providing best care to the patients in the Hospitals and have the facilities of medical consultancies with PGI specialists.

He said that it will also help the faculty members in keeping abreast with latest developments in different areas of healthcare system. He said that this project will involve academic interaction through which excellent academic activities going on in PGI would be made available to the faculty and the students of GMCH.

Dr. K.K. Talwar, Director, PGI responding to the suggestions of General Rodrigues on the Telemedicine Network Communication, assured that the PGI will do its best in making this facility a fruitful venture for the Doctors of GMCH and the patients coming for treatment in the hospital.

Home Secretary, Mr. Krishna Mohan, Senior officers of Chandigarh Administration & Telecommunication and Information Technology Departments were present on the occasion.
