Chandigarh starts communication between G M C and Hospital, Sector 32 and PGI

Chandigarh: Chandigarh is all set to achieve another milestone in better health care as Telemedicine project will be inaugurated tomorrow by Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT, General (Retd.) S. F. Rodrigues. With this inauguration, the Chandigarh Administration will start communication between Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32 and the PGI through Telemedicine project for better patient management and health services.

The major goal of Telemedicine is to eliminate unnecessary traveling of patients by bringing High quality medical services to the patients, rather than transporting them to distant centres. A state-of-Art Telemedicine Facility will be available at GMCH, Sector-32.

There is a big shortage of specialists in the Health Department not only in Chandigarh, but also all over the country. Envisaging the disease burden of the country and better coordination, GMCH would start providing the best care to the patients in this region through Telemedicine.

The implementation of this project will result in better patient management and enhanced academic interaction between two premier medical institutions of the region. At present these institutions have become islands of excellence, working in total isolation from each other resulting in overburden on one institution and underutilization of excellent infrastructure in other.

Revolution in information technology, where the world has become a one big global village, it is but natural that medical professionals should also come together for common goal of providing service to ailing humanity. This project, though long overdue, would act as a knowledge and skills multiplier, providing critical advice and right treatment without need to shift the patient from one place to another.

The pooling of resources and expertise is all the more important because of paucity of super specialists and rising expectations where patients expect and rightly wants nothing less than the best. It has been a endeavor of Chandigarh Administration to expand this network and interconnect all medical facilities under it for seamless flow of patient related information for better implementation of national and local healthcare projects. It would also result in faster dissemination of knowledge from centers of excellence to lesser hospitals which would ultimately result in overall improvement in healthcare delivery.

Chandigarh is already accepted a national health care leader for its progressive thinking in providing best facilities to its residents, which are comparable to the best in the world. This project will be a another stepping stone which in future would lead to a more comprehensive all inclusive networks for  providing excellent healthcare to people of this region, which others would like to follow.
