If you had any doubts about the incorrectness of the rational part of the definition, ‘rational animal’ for human beings, here is a report to set those doubts at rest. A 14 year old boy, a student of class nine was here killed as a human sacrifice. The human sacrifice was offered as part of a plan to bribe the gods into revealing a hidden treasure.
The incident took place in the Nirmal town of Andhra Pradesh’s Adilabad district. When the boy, named Ganesh went missing for two days, the boy’s father Narasaiah registered a case at the local police station. Subsequent investigation by the police led the trial to one Rathod Raju.
“We found out that the one Rathod Raju, a hotel worker who is close to the family, took the teenager along with him two days ago to an unknown place. The boy was missing since then and after investigation we found his body at Nirmal town in Adilabad today,” an officer said.
The boy’s family members alleged he was lured away with snacks by Raju. On interrogating, Raju confessed to having sold the boy to a man named Prabhakar for Rs 20,000. Â Raju has been arrested, but the eight treasure seekers who killed the boy are on the run. The police recovered the body of Ganesh at Shyamgarh Fort on the outskirts of the town in Adilabad district, about 250 km from here on Thursday.
The boy was sacrificed for the believed-to-be hidden treasure in the fort on Amavasya (new moon night) on the intervening night of Jan 24-25. He was buried in the same area and the police exhumed the body Thursday. The body showed signs of rituals having been performed, with turmeric powder, vermilion and other puja related objects found on the victim’s body.
The angry relatives of the boy blockaded a road, demanding the police take immediate action against all accused. According to locals, several people in the town and other areas in the district believe in hidden treasures and that a human sacrifice would reveal these. An autopsy will be conducted on the body and the police are looking for the killers.
